R. Com- panies a large part of the dock and ter- minal properties now occupied by them; served for two years as a director in the Board of Education in Jersey City. In 1879 he became a junior partner in the banking and brokerage firm of H. B. Hol- lins & Co., in 1886 organized the present banking and brokerage house of F. C.


Hollins & Co .; 1886, became a di- rector of the Lake Erie & Western Ry. Co., and was afterwards appointed chair- man of the stockholders' committee of re- organization; after a bitter controversy he carried his plans through successfully, and at the sale of the property secured the road for the stockholders. Was also a director in the Peoria, Decatur & Evans- ville Ry. Co., and, as one of the executive committee, with the late Columbus R. Cummings, sold the road to Columbus C. Mcclellan; on his father's side his ancestry in this country dates back to 1630, while on his mother's side he is a direct descendant of Colonel Hugh McClellan, who came to this country in 1749, and bore such a conspic- uous part in the Revolutionary struggle; was graduated from Williams College in 1853, spent one year in the study of Eng- lish literature, and in 1857 completed his studies in the Theological Seminary at New Brunswick, N. J .; in July of the same year he was ordained and installed pastor of the Reformed Dutch Church of East Williamsburg, N. Y., where he remained until Nov., 1859; then he ac- cepted a call to the Lee Avenue Reformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn, N. Y .; after six years of successful service in this church he became pastor of the First Reformed Dutch Church of Hudson, N. Y., continuing in this field of labor until June 1, 1877; during this pastorate he was a member of the Board of Superintend- ents of the Theological Seminary at New Brunswick, N. J., a member of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Reformed Dutch Church; president of the Particular Synod of New York, delegate to the Pan Presbyterian Council at Edinburgh, and president of the General Synod of the Re- formed Dutch Church; in 1870 he re- ceived from Rutgers College the degree of D. D. In 1877 he removed to Albany and assumed the charge of the State Street Presbyterian Church of that city; the church greatly increased in numbers and influence and became the largest Protestant church in Albany; during his ministry in this church he was summoned to important service throughout the Pres- byterian denomination; in 1879, he was moderator of the Synod of Albany; in 1884, moderator of the Synod of New York; in 1888, delegate to the Pan Pres- byterian Council in London; from 1888 to 1892 was member of the Western Section of the Alliance of Reformed Churches; from 1886 to 1900, trustee of Auburn Theo- logical Seminary; from 1888 to 1900, direc- tor of Union Theological Seminary in
