When the House was called to order, Jos. H. Dickson was designated as Clerk pro tem.
The vote for Speaker of the House was as follows: A. J. Cunningham, 57; R. B. Dennis, 54; Peter Hitchcock, I.
Mr. Hitchcock was subsequently made Speaker pro tem. without opposition.
For Clerk, Amos Layman received 57 votes and B. J. Loomis, 54. J. F. Webster, W. S. Sheppard and O. G. Parr were elected Assistant Clerks, and S. M. Smith, Jr., Official Reporter.
Alexis Keeler was elected Sergeant.at-Arms; First Assistant, Alvah Perry ; Second, S. C. Kerr; Third, Fredrick Blenkner.
The session was devoted largely to the consideration of matters growing out of the war, involving claims of all kinds requiring adjustment and liquidation.
Nearly all the general legislation was of an amendatory character, and the shap- ing up of previous legislation to meet changed and changing conditions.
Among the many acts passed were the requirement that ballot boxes should be opened in the presence of spectators, before the casting of votes at all elections, and the counting should take place in the presence of disinterested spectators ..
The Governor was empowered to remove minor convicts from the penitentiary to the reformatory institutions. The Reform and Industrial Schools for Boys and Girls were fully and completely organized, and provisions made for maintaining them.
The State House Commission was abolished. Provisions were made for the establishment of libraries and the selection of text books under the direction of the School Commissioner. Guardians for the person and property of habitual drunkards were authorized. Regulations for the transportation of nitro glycerine and other high explosives were enacted.

The two Houses met in joint convention on the third of January, 1872, and' the returns of the election were opened, canvassed and the result announced as follows :
Governor-Edward F. Noyes, 238,273; George W. McCook, 218,105; Gideon T. Stewart, 4,068; and there were 20 scattering votes.
Lieutenant Governor-Jacob Mueller, 236,829; Samuel F. Hunt, 217,883; P. M. Weddell, 4,470; and there were 21 scattering votes.
Auditor of State-James Williams, 237,So9; Joseph R. Cockerell, 217,SS3; Wm. B. Chadwick, 4,094.
Treasurer of State-Isaac Welsh, 237.39S; Gustav Bruehl, 218.390 ; Thomas Evans, Jr , 4,115.

On the fourth of January, 1873, the two Houses met to canvass the vote for Sec- retary of State, and the result was announced as follows :
Allen T. Wikoff received 265,925 votes.
Aquilla Wiley received 251,778 votes.
Ferdinand Schumacher received 2,035 votes.
During the session, Allen T. Brinsmade was elected President pro tem. of the Senate.
