June 24-Spanish Cortes dissolved by Queen Regent. Martial law proclaimed in Madrid. The Rough Riders, under Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt, are ambushed by the Spaniards near La Guasima, Cuba. and meet with severe losses. The Span- iards were repulsed with heavy loss.
June 27-Third military expedition to the Philippines leaves San Francisco.
June 30-The crusier Charleston and three transports on their way to Cavite (Ma- nilla Bay ) stopped at the Ladrone Islands and took possession of the capital, Guam, leaving troops to retain control.

July 1-2-The American troops assault and capture the heights of El Caney and San Juan, near Santiago, Cuba.
