annually before the court; their cases called and continued; and in this evasive way, they spent the remainder of their days in their old communities. This old Register, the writer, while clerk, found several years ago. It may now be seen on file in the old clerk's office. A study of it will repay many of our old negro families. When the Civil War came, we had quite a number of this class in Winchester, viz : Edmund Kean, Randall Evans, Sawnee Bell, Robert Orrick's father, Beverly Tucker, Joe Branson, Robert, John and Sim Tokes, Jim Sisco, several of the Walker family, Parson Bob Robinson, William Layton, Parson John Garrison, John Marshall, Hutton Lovett; while in the county could be named Sandy Scott, Frank Whetz, Sam Toles, and others near Round Hill; the Careys and Robinsons in South end of the County, Ben Watson, Jim Allen and others North of Winchester. All were respected by their white friends. Hutton Lovett was a slave of Judge Tucker. His wife belonged to Mr. Tidball, the old clerk. Hutton purchased her freedom for $1200.00,-a fair price for so good a wife. She was the mother of Mont Lovett the well-known barber.
It may be well to say that slavery and the slave trade existed in the North as long as profitable. Then the negroes were driven in gang lots and sold to the planters in Virginia and other Southern States. More negroes were emancipated in Virginia than in all the New England States combined. Virginia was the first State to enact a law to suppress the slave trade. The writer could name several old Quaker fam- ilies, and clergymen of the several churches, who owned negroes. The former gave gradual eman- cipation; the latter educated their slaves to some extent. Of this number we name Rev. Alex. Balmain, Dr. Wm. Hill, Dr. A. H. H. Boyd. Two well-known women of Winchester still living, Ann and Susan Robinson, belonged to the family owned by Dr. Balmain.
The Negro race has always exhibited consid- erable interest in church work. For seventy- five years they had their separate organization. The Methodist branch have occupied a building on East Cork Street, distinguished as the John Mann Church. Prior to the Civil War, their services were conducted by their local preach- ers. Since that time, the congregation has in- creased and the building improved. This church and the Free Will Baptist Church on South Braddock Street, are well supplied with min- isters from time to time, having regular services on every Sabbath.
In the North end of the city are two church- es-one an old Ironside Baptist type. Visitors will find there the same class of preachers that

figured in the long-ago. Their style of service and old-time doctrines, remind one of the ante- bellum days. This building is on North Market Street.
The church on North Main has quite a con- gregation, and a good building.
The two churches-one at Newtown and one at Middletown-have fairly good village congre- gations.
There are several other churches in Freder- ick County.
We can add that the white and colored church- es in the Valley have always worked in har- mony towards the betterment of the race.
L'ENVOI
Farewell, Old Pioneers ! I pen these words with reluctance. You and your descendants have been my companions in the study of the vol- ume just laid aside. Much benefit has been de- rived in following many of your number into Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Texas, and other great States, where your mighty work was done, that has grown familiar to the nation. In many cases, your de- scendants have been traced to this day. This has been wonderfully true of the Lower Valley. Many were found occupying good homes on the
site of the pioneer's cabin. We must not for- get that Frederick County of to-day has a large number of splendid citizens who had no part in the pioneers' work in the Shenandoah; they, however, had ancestors who had pioneers else- where. But as this was intended as a history of the Shenandoah Valley pioneers and their descendants, I reluctantly adhered to the scheme, and only made a departure when unavoidable. My inclination was to embrace all; but the vol- ume grew so bulky, this had to be abandoned. Farewell! All my work has been a pleasure. I have enjoyed every moment in my efforts to trace you. During that time, several hundreds of our well-known men and women have been called hence. Their vacant places will be filled, however, and the grand old Valley will con- tinue to hold her place in the line of progress.
During the latter years of this work, the author was subjected to severe trials. The dark shadow that fell across his pathway, well nigh ended all efforts to complete what he had undertaken. The constant contact with the pioneers and their descendants in the study of their interesting lives during the last three years, has been a solace through many dark days. May the perusal of this volume afford pleasure and instruction to the reader, as its preparation has given-
THE AUTHOR
ADDENDUM
Pending the publication of the "Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants," Win- chester made some important history. The author has been requested to mention two prominent features. The Handley Library photo found in the book exhibits the building in course of construction. The magnificent structure is now completed, and efforts being made to equip the attractive interior so as to reflect credit to the impressive memorial of Judge John Handley in evidence of his philanthropy.
Sewerage System in Winchester
The summer of 1909 produced commotion in the streets of the city while the eight miles of sewerage pipes were laid, traversing all the prin- cipal streets. Excavations were made generally through solid limestone rock, ranging in depth from eight to seventeen feet. At the intersec-
tion of Water and Market streets the large tiles were laid on solid rock foundations, fully fifteen feet below the surface. The installation of this system, at a cost of about $50,000, will doubtless redound to the name and fame of the city as a summer resort for the hundreds of visitors who annually enjoy the advantages of historic Win- chester; while her citizens will enjoy a much- needed comfort. Chief engineer, N. Wilson Davis, of Harrisonburg, Va .; contractors, Irwin Bros.
The casual reader of this book may find what appears many inconsistencies in spelling names of places and persons. The author in many cases conformed to the style adopted in the various periods of early history of the Old Coun- ty. This is gradually explained and styles changed as the book advanced through the Co- lonial Stages.
