REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF ANIMALS.

January 8, 1921.

TO THE HONORABLE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :

I hereby submit to you the report of my work for the past year. At the close of the year 1919, four dogs, and one duck were in quarantine at that time, and after the ex- piration of a ninety day quarantine I examined the same and as they showed no signs of "Rabies" they were released.

In January as usual I received orders from the Depart- ment of Animal Industry to make a complete examination of all neat cattle, sheep, swine and goats in town, and the stables in which they were kept, to be finished by March 1, 1920, but owing to the severe weather and bad travelling I did not finish until some time in May 1920.

On this Inspection I visited 55 stables, in which were kept 469 cattle, 287 swine, 2 sheep and 1 goat. Most of the cattle and stables in this town are kept clean. I found four cows which I had to quarantine for Tuberculosis which were examined by an agent of. the Department, found dis- eased, killed and I had their owners, disinefct their stables in which the diseased animals were kept. In about sixty days after these cows are killed, I have to examine the rest of the herd which have been exposed, which I did but found the rest alright and I have to report all this to the Depart- ment.

June 12, 1920, two horses arrived from New York State and after I examined them and found them alright I re- leased them.

6

February 12, 1920, a cow was quarantined for Tuberculosis examined by an agent found diseased, killed and stable dis- infected.

In April, Rabies made their appearance again, one dog was killed and seven quarantined under suspicion of having Rabies, one of these dogs was killed while in quarantine, as he showed signs of Rabies, the other six showed no signs and after 90 days were released after I examined them.

August 25, another dog had the Rabies, was killed and four other dogs quarantined under suspicion.

In October another dog had the Rabies was killed and two more dogs quarantined under suspicions and are still quaran- tined.

The four dogs quarantined on August 25, were released 90 days after, as they seemed alright.

December, two more dogs had the Rabies, one died, the other was killed and I quarantined two more dogs under suspicion. I will say if dog owners would keep their dogs a little "closer" I think there would be less "Rabies."

November 22, 1920, five cows arrived from out of State and after an examination were released.

Respectfully submitted,

GEORGE S. CHENEY,

Inspector of Animals.

Our work this year has been continued on lines of general improvements in laying out a portion of the new grounds and maintenance of the older part of the .cemetery.

A number of lots have been sold the past year.

For the ensuing year we would recommend more improve- ments in the new grounds as well as our general work, and we would ask for an appropriation of $800.00 and funds re- ceived from the sale of lots.

REPORT OF ENGINEERS.

RECORD OF FIRES FOR THE YEAR 1920.

January 12. Alarm for chimney fire on Park Street. No damage.

February 12. Alarm for fire at Leon Cobb's. No damage. March 3. Alarm for fire in Hotel Office. Damage small.

April 1. Alarm for fire at H. H. Clark's, Pleasant Street. No damage.

July 5. Fire in house of American Steam Packing Co. occupied by R. Lantz, North Street. Damage $1400.00.

September 6. Fire at Corner House, Janes Avenue, burn- ing fat. No damage.

December 25. Still alarm for auto fire on South Street. Damage small.

December 25. Still alarm for chimney fire at Penniman house. No damage.

We have had 51 alarms this year, 31 of them for grass fires set by locomotives.

Our motor apparatus has been a great help to us in getting to fires quickly, our worst handicap is having to tow our pumping engine with the hose truck, which means more or less delay and confusion.

We would recommend the purchase of an auto pumping engine. We believe this piece would be a valuable addition and help to the department.

We thank the voters for the two pieces we have and hope they can see their way clear to get the pump.

We recommend $1,500 regular appropriation. $500 for new hose.
