ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

SCHOOL COMMITTEE

AND THE

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

OF THE

TOWN OF MEDFIELD

YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 1928

147

ANNUAL REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE AND SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

Town of Medfield for the Year Ending December 31, 1928

Members and Organization

SUSAN M. CLARK, Secretary Term expires 1931

DR. FRANK H. CLOUGH, Chairman Term expires 1929

ORION WIGHT, resigned Term expires 1930

RICHARD JOHNSON Appointed until March, 1929

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The vacancies on the Board caused by the resignations of Francis Kingsbury and Orion Wight have been filled by Dr. William E. Crocker, Dr. Frank H. Clough and Richard Johnson. Regular meetings have been held, the Superintendent and all members present. Leading educators are concerned over the ever increasing cost of child education. We aim to expend wisely the money that a generous town provides. The budget must cover the upkeep of two buildings and their grounds, for supplies and salaries. There has been no change in the teaching staff at the Ralph Wheelock School and but one at the High. We lost Miss Donahue to Brighton High and gained Miss Tuttle. Mr. Lewis Maxwell was hired as teacher-coach for three months. Our two cultural studies of music and drawing have made a fine showing and the work done in the other courses compares favorably with that done in the larger towns. So many children learn-not out of books but by doing-that we recommend courses in manual training. Perhaps the most important interest after health is the use our boys and girls make of their spare time. "Habits that form like cobwebs be-

148

come cables," so honest work and clean play must be provided to make Jack a good boy. We note with appreciation the aim, the effort and the fidelity of our teachers who are real builders of our citizenry. When these qualities are recognized they work with unbounded courage and happiness.

The future of our young citizens depends largely upon them- selves. They must have the best fitting possible to enter into the world of work but let them remember that "The cherry-tree must grow its own blossoms," they cannot be put on. We hope for a continuance of the great blessing of school health and we ask of the citizens their full support of courage and cash.
