(A beautiful obituary appeared in the Congregationalist, signed F.A. F. fror: which I take the following extract: "She was an earnest, faithful Christian; conscientious, devout, patient, dutiful, andspiritually-

minded, having her "affections set on things above." In her appointed sphere she steadfastly and faithfully served her Divine Lord, developing a character remarkable for its mellowed, chastened tone, its uniformly devout, heavenly spirit, and its faithfulness in all the Christian graces; - in a word, for its beautiful symmetry, -rather than for the singular prominence of any particular virtue :- the constant, even tenor of a good life. And her peaceful end, so full of comfort and of hope, was but the befitting termination of a life of sweet serenity and trust in God, so beautifully portrayed in that favorite Psalm of hers( the twenty-third. ) which had
been as the light of Heaven to her during her pilgrimage, and for which she called for her consolation and support, as she was nearing the entrance into the dark valley. Her unostenta- tious, consistent life, day by day, as it was the highest possible evidence of her Christian character and excellence, so is it, also, the most precious memorial she could have left as an inestimable legacy to bereaved friends who mourn her loss. By it, she "being dead yet speaketh," and its testimony is both invaluable and imperishable. But few, in the quiet village where she passed the last years of her life, beyond her oun immediate circle of loving friends, knew what a life of singular sweetness and beauty has faded out from their midst." A ged 27 enlisted 13 July 1864 in the 3d Regt. of Mass. Cavalry. His name appears among the unassigned recruits and he is not accounted for on the rolls of the Adj. General. He was one of the men whose services were purchased in Boston to fill the quota of men called for from this town. By a law of the State passed during the Civil war all men who enlisted to fill the quota of any town was "towned" by doing so and a town became liable for his support or for the support of his family if he had one. The technical phrase is that a man enlisting "obtained a residence" in the town for which he enlisted.
