b. in Wayland 12 Sept.1787 son of Aaron and Rachel ( Griffin) Damon, grad.Harv. Coll. . 1811, in a clalsis? of unusual excellence. He used to say, jestingly, that "Edward Everett, was the first scholar in the class, and modesty prevented his saying who was the second. " He studied Divinity at the Cambridge Divinity School, and late in 1814, was invited to become the minister of this town. This he accepted and was ordained with the usual formalities 1 Feb. 1815. he was ad.f.c. 1 Feb.1815 from the Ist Church in Andover. He m. in Lynnfield, 16 Oct.1815(In. entered in this town, 16 Sept. 1815) Rebecca Derby b. in Lynnfield, 1795 dau. of John and Sarah ( Norrood) Derby. She was ad.f.c. 30 Nov.1815 from the Church in Lynnfield.

They lived at (7) He was School Comm. 1826-27. He continued to be the Minister of this town about 13 years, when he asked for a dismission which took effect 2 Dec. 1827. They removed to Amesbury, both being dismissed to the Church there, 22 June 1828. He was the Minister of a society in Amesbury for about two years, and in 1830 they removed to West Cambridge, where he became the Minister of a flourishing Unitarian Society and was considered to be one of the prominent clergyman of that denomination. lie preached in this tom the Sunday before his death, 18 June 1843 and it is a little remarkable that his first and last sermons, as an ordained Minister, were preached in this town. He was taken sick in the pulpit, while conducting the services, in West Cambridge, living but an hour or two and died Sunday, 25 June 1843. She d. in Boston 21 May 1852-56. I have not ascertained the locality of the residence of this family, or indeed of any of these families of Darlings. Their names appear on the North tax lists, but that is the nearest I can locate them. I cannot say where this family went to from here but I venture the guess that they went to Winchendon. Chil .:

I find no evidence in any way that his wife ever lived here, but the truth may be that she d. before his coming here, and that he came here and lived with one of his sons. I do not find that he was ever taxed here. ily account of the different families of this name is quite imperfect, and unsatisfactory. (24) JOHN DARLING JR.


(Son of 23) m. 13 Oct.1744 (D.S) Ruth Boynton ( 232 B) b. 31Mar. 1727. Both o.b.c. 3 Feb.1745. They lived in the N. part of the town but - cannot locate them any more definitely. In 1760 or 61 they removed to Winchendon, with his brother Ticotry and his family. De was engaged in the French and Indian wars; was in the expedition into Canada, under General Wolfe, and was at the battle of Quebec in Sept. 1759, when Wolfe was killed. After his return, some Indians stated that they once watched intending to kill him, as he was mowing in a meadow. Says Dr. Whiton "he was a portly athletic man whose large prominent eyes I well remember; but the whites of his eyes were so big and glaring, they dared not fire at him, Indian superstitiion saved his life." He became a prominent man in Winchendon where he d. She d. in W. Chil .: 1786

She went to Chesterfield, N.H. I know of but one son, by first wife.
