School Committee 1773, '4' 5' 6'8 '81,'2. Selectmen 1781, '2,'3. Both r.b.c. 15 Dec.1765. She r.b.c. and ad.f.c. 5 June 1768. He was a man of much influence in the affairs of this town and was generally selected as referee in matters of dispute between his neighbors and fellow-townsemen. During the war of the Revolution he was appointed to superintend the drafting of men for the army from this district. he was Lieutenant Colonel in his brother Benjamin's Regiment and he was out in Shay's Rebellion. The prominent traits of his character were refined and elevated feelings ; a religious sentiment; generosity in excess, and a warm sympathy with the distressed. These, united with extreme nervous sensibility so involved him with every one who asked his assistance that he suffered a considerable pecuniary loss which led to anxiety about the support of his family and induced a mental derangement that continued during the last thirty years of his life.
