ZABDIEL ADAMS

Was b. in Braintree now Quincy 5 Nov1739. He was a double cousin of President John A. their fathers being brothers and their mothers, sisters. He grad. at Harv. Coll. 1759 studied his pro- fession at Cambridge; was ad. to f.c.10 July 1764, from Ist church in Braintree and was ordained as the Minister of this town 5 Sept. 1764 as the successor of his father-in-law, Rev. David Stearns. He m. 5 June 1765 (TH) Elizabeth Stearns (134 S.) b. 20 Apr.1742. He was a trustee of Lawrence Academy, Groton, 1793 to 1801. He was a good writer and was noted for his impressive and animated delivery. Many of his sermons delivered on public occasions were printed. A full account of Mr. Adams will be found in my History of the town. He lived where John F. Brown now lives (117). He continued to be the Minister of the town until he d. 1 Mar. 1801, 61, 3,24. (S) The town erected a tablet to his memory on which is the following inscription :

"This Monument is erected by the town of Lunenburg as a tribute of affectionate respect to the memory of their deceased Pastor, the Reverend Zabdiel Adams, who died, universally esteemed and respected, March 1, 1801, in the 62 year of his age and 37 of his Ministry. An active and capacious mind, nurtured by a public education, rendered him an acceptable, instructive and useful Minister. The asperities of his constitution were softened by the refining influence of Religion. With a heart and understanding formed for social life he seldom failed to interest and improve all who enjoyed his communications. In his Ministerial performances a ready utterance, commanding eloquence, and elevated sentiments made him engaging and profitable. A Catholic belief of the Gospel, a respect and love of the Saviour, and a confidence in the faithful- ness of God, disarmed Death of its terrors and inspired a rational and certain hope of a glorious resurrection. He was a bright and shining light and we rejoiced for a season in his light "

She d. 16 Aug.1800, 58,3,27 (S) Inscription on her g-s:

"She venerated her God and attended the public worship as long as she was able. Hospitality, economy, and diligence were the leading features of her character. She left a husband and nine children to lament her loss and is gone to that world from whose bourn no traveller will return."
