He was never a resident of Luneburg but was largely interested in real-estate here and passed. a good deal of his ti e here, with his brothers-in-la", Col.Josiah Willard and nev. David etearns and with Vol. Benjamin Bellows. Being, for those days, and in this section of the country, a man of large wealth, he was of much assistance to young men just starting farms in this, then wilderness, in advancing then money to buy stock, tools etc. He had large business transactions with Col. Bellos he furnishing the money, and Col.Bellows doing the business, to purchase what is now Bellows Falls, the sum being Bloco or about $5000. - equal to at least five times that amount at the present day. He was a very prominent man in the Indian and French Wars, attaining · the rank of Colonel, -a rank fully as high as that of a Major-General of these times. He d. in Dunstable. ( Son of 208) b. in Brookline, 28 Jan.1818 in early life engaged in trade in Groton and for many years was in business in that town. fis studious habits enabled him to make up the deficiences of his early education and there are few graduates of ou colleges who have pursued a more thorough course of study. He was a member of the state Legislature for 7 years from Groton; for 1l years Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Educati on; member of the Constitutional Convention in 1853; Bank Commissioner in 1849, '50; and Governor of Massachusetts 1851 and 1852. He was the First Comm. issioner of U.S. Internal Revenue, in 1862, '63; was a member of the U. S. House of Representatives for the 38th, 39th, 40th and 4ist Congress; was appointed by President Grant 11 Mar. 1869 Secretary of t ... U.S.Treasury which high office he held until 1873 when he was chosen U.S. Senator from Mass. in place of Hon.henry Wilson, chosen Vice-President of the U.S. In the intervals of his public employments he practises law, L.L. D. Har. Coll. He m. Sarah Ardelia Thayer b. in Hollis, N.H. dau. of Nathan and- Hannah ( Jewett) Thayor. They live in Groton. Chil .:
