Dec. 4, 1854, a. 94; by industry, good judg- ment and economy he had accumulated what was a large property for the times, which was left without reserve to his wife; but there is evidence of a mutual understanding that it was to be eventually used for some public purpose; this fund was impaired by some un- fortunate investments, but by the most scrupulous and conscientious frugality and economy "Aunt Esther" was able to leave a largely increased amount to a board of trustees for the purpose of estab- lishing and maintaining a Free Academy and Public Library on this old historic ground; the building erected for these institutions prob. covers the very spot where stood the house of Parson John Williams, Feb. 29, 1703-4, and whence he and his family were carried to death

other in Greenville County; in this service within 18 mos. he trav- eled 7000 miles on horseback; in 1826 he preached a strong anti- slavery sermon; this gave offense to a few but brought new demon- strations of esteem fr. others; among his parishioners were John C. Mr. Dickinson was a scholar of diverse attainments; his published works show him to be familiar with law, theology, his- tory, education and general literature; some of these are Powers and Duties of Sheriffs, Coroners, &c., 1810; Compendium of the Bible, which went through six editions, 1814-17; Historical and Statistical View of Mass., and several pamphlets on Dfd., 1813-18; Geography of the World, 1813; Digest of Common Law, Statute Law, &c., 1818; Christian and Miscellaneous Port- Folio, 1823; New Version of the New Testament, 1833; he projected a Gazetteer of Mass. but it was only partially published; he was a profound thinker and his scientific platform addresses were calculated to make a deep impression; his honesty was unquestioned; he was simple minded and single heart- ed as a child; unwise in worldly wisdom, his plans often miscarried, but he was unflagging in industry and hopeful in adversity-patient and cheerful under all misfortunes; his later yrs. were spent upon Pine Hill in a house constructed by his own hands; here his overtaxed mental powers were sometimes clouded, and here he d. and was buried in 1862.
