(13), b. 1829; began learning the trade of printer when 15, at Gfd .; lived 3 yrs. at Brook Farm Ass'n, Roxbury; read proof in State printer's office, Boston; worked later as printer in N. Y. and Washington, in Ohio, Ind. and Tenn .; Apr., 1862, was commissioned Capt. and A. D. C. and placed on the staff of Gen. Rufus Saxton; served later on the staff of Gen. R. K. Scott and of Gen. O. O. Howard; was mustered out July, 1866, but retained by Gen. Howard for service in the Freedman's Bureau to its close; was soon appointed clerk in the Treasurer's Department; he worked his way up to the head of a division in the Comptroller's office, being employed occasionally by the secretary on missions of high financial trust and honor in Mexico and Europe; being a true patriot during the war he was an "offensive partisan"-to the South -and his head was demanded of the new administration; he was ac- cordingly discharged in 1886. He m. Jan. 26, 1861, Mary Wells Grant of Amesbury, Mass.

Apr. 8, 1682. He m. Ursula, prob. dau. Rich- ard and Ursula Kimball of Watertown; (2) between 1658 and Nov. 4, 1663, Susanna, wid. of Henry Ambrose.
