[SHELDON, ISAAC, of Dorchester 1634; rem. with part of the congregation of Rev. John Warham in Sept., 1635, to found a plan- tation at Wind., Ct. I copy fr. the original record at Wind. that: Isaac Sheldon owned there, Jan. 10, 1640, a home lot of 3 acres, with house, barn and orchard "purchaced of John Stiles;" another lot on

the Street, "purchaced of Samuel Rockwell;" a meadow lot "by pur- chace of Richard Samwas," and another lot "purchaced of Thomas Parsons." One of these lots was bounded on two sides by "his own land," which may have been given him in the original distribution. But these four lots were not original assignments, but were obtained by purchace. These particulars are given as evidence in a disputed case, and to prove that Isaac Sheldon was of full business age at this time. Some genealogists insist that this Isaac Sheldon was the same man who testified bef. a court in Nhn., Mar. 25, 1679, that he was "about 50 years old." If this be true, then he was but 6 when he went to Wind., and but 11 when he held four pieces of real estate by purchace, and doubtless a large area by assignment. It is true that land was sometimes given to minors in the original division of plantations, but who ever heard of a boy of 11 buying house lots and meadow land? While being satisfied that Isaac of Windsor was of age, I can give no further account of him or his family. I assume that Isaac of Nhn. was his son, because in 1652 he is found in posses- sion of this land at Wind. Not unlikely Isaac had other sons and went away to live with them; am still [1886 | engaged with H. S. Shel- don of West Suff., Ct., in an exhaustive search for the original Simon pure Isaac. ]
I choose to let the above stand as printed in 1886 as explanatory, and to prevent subsequent confusion; since 1886 it has been shown that the entries at Windsor, given above as being on a page headed, "Jan. 10, 1640," were really made at a later date, to utilize a blank page; with this fact established, all evidence of the above Isaac dis- appears. Isaac (1) is the true head of this Sheldon family.
1. SHELDON, ISAAC, b. abt. 1629; in 1652 he held the home lot noted above and was permitted to "keep house" there with Samuel Rockwell, "so they carry themselves soberly, and do not entertain Idel parsons to ye expense (?) of time by night or daye;" this bach- elor life soon ended; in 1654 he sold out to Samuel Rockwell and rem. to Nhn., where he was one of the first settlers; in 1660 he was assigned a home lot on Bridge street, which has been handed down fr. father to son to the present day; he was selectman 1656 and a lead- ing man in town affairs; d. 3. JOHN, S. of Isaac (1), b. 1658; "Landlord;" came to Dfd. at the permanent sett. and at once took a leading part in the affairs of the plantation; was on the first board of selectmen; ensign in first military company; capt. 1707; dea. in the chh .; he was the builder of the historic "Old Indian House," whose scarred and battered door is a center of interest in Memorial Hall. This house he was occupy- ing at the desolation of the town, Feb. 29, 1704; the next winter he was sent by Gov. Dudley on a mission to Can. and ret. in the spring with five Dfd. captives, two of whom were Hannah, his son's wife, and Esther, oldest dau. of Parson Williams; the next winter he was again sent to Can. to negotiate the redemption of English captives; he was so successful that May 30, 1706, he sailed fr. Quebec with 44, leaving 57 to be transported on the brigantine Hope, which was dis- patched for them on his arrival at Boston, Aug. I. Mr. Williams came with the latter company, which arrived Nov. 6. Williams speaks of Sheldon as "a Good man and a True Servant of the Church in Deerfield, who twice took his Tedious and Dangerous Journey in the winter from New England to Canada on these occa- sions." But still again, a third time, he was sent in 1707, returning with seven captives-113 in all-but from different parts of New England. For a full acct. of the useful life of this man see ante, p. 324, and "The History of Ensign John Sheldon," a paper read at the annual meeting of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, Feb. 17, 1878, by Miss C.
