Justin B., Nov. 27, 1824 (16).

13, EDWARD, S. of Justin (9), b. 1793; one of Dfd's most distin- guished sons; a "self-made man;" brought up to work on his father's farm, his scholastic training was at the town school and six winter terms at Dfd. Academy; he was, however, honored with the degree of A. M. by Yale, in 1818, LL. D. by Harvard, 1840, 1). D. Mid. C., 1846. He was preceptor of Dfd. Academy, 1813-19, pastor at Con. 1821-5, Prof. of Chem. and Nat. Hist. at A. C. 1825-45, Prof. of Theology and Geology, and President of the college 1845-54. He became interested in astronomy at an early age; his first publication was an almanac, 1813-17, for which he made his own observations, and published corrections in the calculations made by European as- tronomers; being taken to task for this, he entered on a contest with the magnates of astronomical science in the old world, and came off acknowledged conqueror. A partial failure of eyesight drove him from his favorite field; he turned to geology and found the work which had been waiting his coming for untold ages; to him old Earth gave up its secrets, he tapped the rocks with his magic hammer, the leaves in the book of nature rolled up one after another like a scroll, and he read as from an open book a new history of the creation; like John in Patmos he saw a "new earth." Again his name was heard in lands beyond the sea, and gray-haired theologians became his pupils in the "Religion of Geology;" he was State Geol- ogist of Mass. in 1830, of N. Y. in 1836, of Vt. in 1857. His pub-

lished Reports and papers are too numerous to be even named here; the "Ichnology of New England," giving the results of his thirty years' labor on the subject, published by the State in 1858, is the great work upon which his fame was most enduringly established as a man of science; his exposition of the fossil footprints of the Ct. valley was accepted by the scientists, only after a severe and pro- longed contest.
