13. DAVID, S. of Samuel (9), b. 1712; lived on lot No. 35, where he had a store and was many years in trade; as early as 1747 he was engaged in the fur trade with the Mohawks; was a sol. in the Indian wars and col. of the Northern Hampshire regt., which office he resigned Feb., 1778, on account of his age. He was an ardent Whig and chairman of the Committee of Correspondence and Safety; was delegate to the Provincial Congress at Cambridge, May, 1775, and delegate to the Constitutional Convention, 1779-80; was very prominent and very useful in town affairs; in consequence of many sacrifices and losses during the war, his affairs became involved and in 1787 one of his creditors, William Hyslop, obtained a judgment against him and his sons for £1236; his whole estate consisting of several homesteads and 600 acres of land passed into other hands; he d. Apr. 19, 1792. He m. 1741, Thankful, dau. Thos. Taylor, and prob. wid. of Oliver Doolittle; there are two traditions relating to this marriage; both agree in saying that David Field and Oliver Doolittle were both suitors for the hand of Thankful, and that the minister's son was the favored one; one says she changed her mind and married Field-the other that she m. Doolittle and soon became a wid. ; no evidence has been found to settle the question; she d. Mar. 26, 1803.

15. SAMUEL, S. of David (13), b. 1743; grad. at Yale, 1762; studied divinity with his pastor, Rev. Jonathan Ashley, but became a Sandemanian, prob. under the influence of his brother-in-law, Rev. James Taylor; he read law with Daniel Taylor at Hinsdale, N. H., and was admitted to the Hampshire county bar and practiced law through life; he engaged in trade; abt 1771 rem. his business to Gfd .; after abt. four years there and two on a farm at Con. he ret. to Dfd. and continued farming; was town clerk, and rep. to the Gen. Court 1773, 4, '91, member of the convention to ratify the Constitu- tion of the U. S., 1788; in 1794 rem. to Con., where he preached a while to a society of Sandemanians; he was a writer of some ability, and after his death a collection of prose and verse was published by

Y., where he continued to m'f'r nails; in 1816 he had a "fit of the numb palsy, and has not spoke one word for three weeks," writes a nephew; he rem. to Sodus, N. Y., 1819, where he d. May 11, 1821; he inherited some of his father's literary taste and occasional- ly "dropped into poetry." He m. June 20, 1772, Ketura, dau. Jona. Hoyt of Cheapside; she d. 1814, a. 61.
