Can. in 1714, and proved a very useful assistant; in 1748, 12 Indian boys of the Hollis school were put into his care and were in his house at Newington, Ct., three yrs .; at the time of his death "he was employed by Mr. Isaac Hollis to support and educate at his charge 24 Indian boys," and Gen. Joseph Dwight was empow- ered by the Gen. Court to take charge of this school until Mr. Hollis be heard from; Dwight employed Joseph Kellogg to succeed his br.

4. JOSEPH, s. of Martin (2), b. 1691 ; cap. 1704; remained in Can. ten yrs .. "travelling two & fro amongst the French and Indians;" he says he "learned the French language as well as the languages of all the tribes of Indians he traded with, and the Mohawks, & had got into a very good way of business: So as to get Considerable of monies & other things & handsomely to support himself & was un- der no restraint at all." When Stoddard and Williams came home fr. Quebec in 1714 they sent Martin Kellogg to find his br. Joseph, with assurance of government employ if he would ret. to N. E. ; Mar- tin was successful and the two came home by land; Joseph was made interpreter and on the breaking out of Father Rasle's war was com- missioned lieut. under Capt. Samuel Barnard. The next yr. he was put in command at Nfd. as captain; in 1726 he rec'd an urgent call fr. the New York authorities to settle at Albany with liberal pay and congenial service, but he declined and remained in command of Fort Dummer, and the "Truck House" established there for trad- ing with the Indians; in 1740 he was called to be the general inter- preter to the Indian nations, in which post he continued till his death. Capt. Kellogg was employed as the interpreter for the Mohawk ch. at Stockbridge, and paid fr. the fund left "by Sir Peter Warren for the education of Mohawk children," and he succeeded his br. Capt. Martin in the care of the Hollis school for Indian boys; he was Justice of the Peace and the following is one of his official certifi- cates :


"Hamcher Silliset: Northfield December ye 17, Ano Dom. 1731: then peter Euens parsanely aperd before me, one of his Magesties justeses, and fraeely acnoleged the within wriin instrument to be his free act and Deede.

He d. at Schenectady in 1756, while with Gov. Shirley on his un- fortunate Oswego expedition. He m. Mar. 10, 1719, Rachel Devo- tion of Suff.
