Dedham, where in 1664 the town voted him leave to cut timber for fencing and building, if not found on his own land, and meanwhile to "sojourn at Samuel Parker's, if he carry himself in due manner;" but it was his disposition or his fate not to sojourn long at any place; he was here as a sett. in 1673; lived on No. 30 and boarded Samuel Mather, the young min- ister; for an unpaid board bill at the breaking up in 1675, the town in 1684 gave him 20 acres of land on Green river; he was one of the unfortunate ones who attempted a settlement here in 1677, and was cap. by Ashpelon and taken to Can. The story of his captivi- ty and sufferings was told by Increase Mather in his "Remarkable Providences." For an account of his redemption through the ro- mantic quest of Waite and Jennings, see ante p. 183; he was of Hat. after his return; was of Branford, Ct., 1679, whence he went to Suff., 1683, where he d. TAYLOR, JOHN; of Wind., 1640; a juror 1641-4; Nov. 24, 1645, having "fully intended and prepared for a voyage for England," he made a will, leaving to his "daughters-in-law." to be divided equally among them, "all my land that lyes on ye East side of ye great riv- er in lieu of my engagement with them upon my marriage, and that my wife shall trayne them up until they come to ye age of eighteen years & my sd wife to have ye benefit of ye sd land until yt time." He gives his wife and two sons his house and lands in Wind .; this will was presented for probate by son John, 1694; there is a tradi- tion in the family that John, soon after making his will, sailed from New Haven and was lost at sea; this tradition is doubtless true; he embarked on the famous "Phantom Ship" which sailed from New Haven for England, Jan., 1645-6; for an account of its ghostly re- turn see "Mather's Magnalia" or Hist. of Nfd., p. 553.
