3. GEORGE, S. of Aaron (1), b. 1822; he attained a national repu- tation as a painter, and no art gallery in this country will be com- plete without a specimen of his work; in boyhood he showed a nat- ural aptitude and fondness for sketching; this tendency towards art was discouraged, if not frowned upon, and at the age of 13 he was put into a grocery store in Boston, and later into a shoe store; this life he could not abide, and he was soon back upon the farm; in the spring of 1837 he joined a party of surveyors going fr. Dfd. to Illi- nois to lay out a railroad; the financial crash of that year stopped all railroad building, and he again came home; aft. a yr. in Dfd. Academy-in 1840 under Luther B. Lincoln-he went again to Bos- ton to seek his fortune; he became interested in the daguerreotype, a new invention, and brought home an outfit for taking sun pictures; his brother Augustus was a portrait painter, and we may be sure George had handled his brush at every opportunity; he had attained some skill, and in 1841 the two set out on a professional tour; he was thus launched on a career which he followed with varying success for nearly 20 yrs .; in 1860 he visited the art galleries of Europe; on his return he took charge of the home farm, a step made necessary, it seemed to him, by the death of his father; here he did a large and apparently successful business during the period of inflated values which followed the war; but when the reaction came he was carried under in the storm; possibly some part of the disaster may be attrib- uted to the fact that his heart was not in the business; the most at- tractive part of the establishment was an out house converted into a studio; here he spent every moment that could be snatched from the hard work of a practical farmer; here, apart from all professional companionship or sympathy, in apathetic solitude and obscurity, he courted the ideal; here the imaginings of his youth and early man- hood were reforged and shaped on the anvil of patient and conscien- tious toil; here he dreamed, and hoped, and worked, and waited; the outcome is well known; forced from his retreat by financial disaster, he faced the art world at Boston with the results of his matured stud- ies, and was at once recognized as a star of the first magnitude; the aim and end of his life was secured; he died in Brookline, Mar. 21, 1884, when at the zenith of his fame. He m. Oct. 17, 1861, Agnes Gordon, dau. Stephen Higginson of Dfd. and Boston.
