Abner Mitchell and marched to Ticonde- roga to resist the invasion fr. Canada; retreated with Gen. St. Clair to Fort Edward; here Mitchell's company was told they might go home; Abiel, however, joined the Co. of Lieut. Johnson of Ash., and retreated to Half Moon; at this point he left the disorganized army and went to Bennington; he found Gen. Stark organizing a force, joined him and was in the battle of Bennington; soon aft. the battle Capt. Joseph Stebbins arrived with a Dfd. Co .; Harding joined him and marched to Battenkill Creek, joined Gen. Gates's army, under the immediate command of Benedict Arnold; was in the bat- tle of Bemis' Heights and Stillwater; the day aft. the surrender of Burgoyne Stebbins dismissed his Co .; in Aug., 1779, Harding enlist- ed for 3 mos. under Capt. Rice and went to Albany; in 1780 served 6 mos. at West Point, under Lieut. Thomas W. Dickinson, and was made orderly sergt .; in Aug., 1781, he enlisted for 3 mos., served as orderly sergt., under Capt Oliver Shattuck, marching to a block house near Saratoga commanded by Col. With the materials of this trade be began painting portraits, and made a success from the start; he went to Kentucky and within six months he painted 100 portraits; aft. two years in Philadelphia and three in Europe be went to Boston; went again to England in 1843, where he was the honored guest of leading men of the kingdom, many of whom sat for their portraits; among his sitters in this country were Charles Carroll, Madison, Munroe, J. Q. Adams, Wirt, Webster, Clay, Cal- houn, Allston, Daniel Boone and Gen. Sherman; his later years were spent in Spfd., but he d. in Boston, Sept. 1, 1866, having achieved a world wide fame in the realms of art.
