SAMUEL, s. of Jonathan (9), b. 1730; kept a tavern on No. 16, which he sold in 1762 and rem. to Bratt .; had a sawmill "near the highway" in 1769; he was a prominent leader in the Hampshire Grant troubles, on the side of New York; was a col., a judge of inferior courts, 1768-72; rep. to the N. Y. Colonial Assembly 1773-5; was a Tory; it being discovered that he was a medium of communication between N. Y. and Canada a party of soldiers was sent to arrest him; having notice of this movement Wells fled towards Albany; while eat- ing supper at a house in Bromley the soldiers came in; both parties spent the night there; Wells not being known, the capt. in command sent for his arrest led his party towards Bratt., while Wells made the

best of his way to N. Y .; after the close of the Rev. war, each of the eleven surviving ch. of Col. Wells had 1200 acres of land granted them in Canada, by the crown, in compensation for their father's loyalty, and they all rem. there abt. 1798-1802; he d. in Bratt. Aug. 6, 1786. He m. Grip;" blacksmith; lived in 1774 on the site of the Franklin County Bank building, with his shop on the site of Sanborn's block; he was a man of work and worth; in the last French and Indian war was a Ranger under Capt. Burke and cap. by Indians while on a scout at Sabbath Day Point, June 25, 1758, taken to Can .; ran the gauntlet and came out with applause because of a furious kick which he gave an old squaw at its close; this was considered evidence of a true spirit, and brought him into favor; he was exchanged and reached home via France and England; sett. in Shel .; was selectman 1770-71 ; was capt. of a co. of minute men, with Ezekiel Foster of Ber. as lieut., and marched on the Lexington alarm; the co. was made up of men fr. Gfd., Shel., and Ber .; May 1, the co. was reorganized under Capt. Wells, Lieut. Jonathan Poole of Shel. and Lieut. Ezekiel Foster and served in the siege of Boston; was out on the lakes the next year and assisted in the capture of Burgoyne; he rem. to Ber. after the war; was member of the Constitutional Convention, 1788; lived in that part now Leyden; was selectman at its organization as a dist., 1784, and in 1785-8 and 91; he led a co. fr. Leyden, Col. and Ber. in Shays Rebellion; rem. to Gfd. 1793, where he d. Mar. 24, 1809. He m. Sept. 7, 1761, Mehitable, dau. Jonathan Smead; she d. in Gfd. Dec. 1, 1801, a. 60.
