2. JOHN, S. of Elijah (1), b. 1731; lieut .; tailor, trader and inn- keeper; on the fly leaf of his account book in Memorial Hall we read : "Early in July 1756, I cum first to Live at Deerfield, at Mr John Sheldons House and Began to work att my trade and was taken sick." Aug. 2, 1756, his br. Hezekiah writes him an affectionate letter fr. Nhn. about sending word of his condition to Wethersfield, and of taking Dr. Mather up to Dfd .; the letter closes: "Brother I expect to hear every day when mother is Dead and you Sick and in a Strange Land but I will Come and live with you if you grow wors." There is a touch of pathos in this letter, that had been wanting, had this loving br. known into what gentle hands the sick stranger had fallen, or foreseen how the adventure would culminate two yrs. later. Aft. his marriage he went to Newington, Ct., but came back in the spring of 1763, and in 1767 he bought lot No. 15, and Benj. Munn built him a shop, where he carried on the business of a tailor, being famous for his leather breeches; his account books show that he also kept a store and entertained travelers; d.
