Assembled at the Meeting house in said Town according to Law (as by the warrants for Calling the Same may more fully appear) on the nineteenth day of May Anno Domini 1768 &c


The Selectmen Moderator


1st Proxes were brought into the Box for the Election of a Representative


the votes were Counted & Sorted: but no Choice was made.


The Same was done three Times & no Person was Elected 2ly Voted that Mr Benjamin Fairfield be moderator to Act on the other Articles Contained in the warrant for calling this meeting.


3ly Voted that this meeting be Adjourned to monday the thirtieth of this instant may one o clock afternoon : then M' Moderator declared sd meeting to be adjourn'd Accordingly to this Place.


At a Town meeting &c held May 30th 1768 upon ad- journment voted, That the three districts in this Town as they are heretofore, meeted and bounded by, the Town Respecting the Surveyor of Highways, Shall still abide the Same.


2ly Voted that every Person who performs a days Labor upon the sd ways to the acceptance of his Surveyor for the Time being Shall have two Shillings Reward, and in like Manner for every yoke of Oxen one Shilling & four pence, and in like Manner for every cart So imployed one Shilling pr day, and in like manner for every horse So Imployed one shilling & four pence pr day; out of the owners Respective Tax toward Sd way or otherwise out of the Publick Treasury of Sd Town


Whereas the Committee Chosen on the 29th day of Sep- tember 1766 to Settle yee boundaries with Beverly do report that their Number is too Small and their Power Rather too Scant as well in their own, as in the Opinion of the Gentlemen who met them on the Part of the Town of Beverly, and a Proposal was made to add to the Num- ber & Power on both Sides that a Final Settlement be Made of sd boundary line - -

At a meeting of the Inhabitants of Wenham Legally warn'd and Convened at the Meeting House in Sd Town on Wednesday the 25t day of September Anno Domini 1768 : as per Warrant on File. may fully appear. - M" Benjamin Fairfield was unanimously chosen Moderator. Voted That Mr Benjamin Fairfield be a Committee in the Name, and in the behalf of the Inhabitants of this Town to Convene with Such Persons as Shall be Sent from the Several Towns in this Province, As a Committee of Convention to meet at Faneuil Hall, in Boston on thursday the 22ª day of this Instant September ; that Such Measures May be Consulted & advised as his Majestys Service, and the Peace and Safety of his Subjects in the Province may require. -


Then the Moderator declared this Town Meeting to be Adjourned to Monday the third day of October next at 3 o'clock P. M.


At a Town Meeting held at Wenham Meeting House on Monday the third day of Octobr 1768 : upon adjournment &C. - the Committee for this Town, reported that the Committee of Convention at Faneuil Hall Boston, having finished their Business had dissolved themselves, After receiveing sd report, Mr Moderator Dissolved the Town Meeting. -

The Committee Chosen to Treat with yee Rev'd Mr Joseph Swain reported in writting under the Gentlemans own hand, Dated October Seventeenth Anno Domini 1768: Shewing upon what Supposition he is willing to be dismissed from this People. - The same is directed to Nathaniel Brown Esqr: the Rest of yee Committee Chosen to Convene with me. - The aforesd writting by the war- rant of this meeting could not be Considered. - The Revd M' Joseph Swain by the Same Committee Sent in to the Town a memorial directed to the inhabitants of the Town of Wenham, dated yee 20th ult. wherein he Pro- posed what is Contained in the Second Article of the warrant of this meeting which memorial was Considered, & Negative.

Proxes were twice brought into the Box for the Elec- tion afores'd, and counted by the Selectmen by which it appeared that No Person was Elected. Upon a motion made and Seconed, the Question was Put whether Proxes Should be brought in Again for a Third trial, and it Pass'd in the Negative.


Then M' John Friend was Chosen moderator to finish the Remaining Business of the Meeting


Voted that the Highway Tax or Rate Bills Presented by the Selectmen be Accepted.


Voted that Mr Patches Rates mentioned in the warrant of this meeting be not Relinquished.


Voted that Samuel Patches Rates mentioned in the afore- s'd warrant be Abated.

Capt Nathaniel Brown was Chosen moderator The Question was Put whether the Town would recon- sider their former votes respecting M' Timothy Patch's Tax being Abated to him and it Pass'd in the Negative. Voted that the list of Juriors by the Selectmen Presented for Approbation be Accepted. And that Ens' John Friend & Deacon Samuel Tarbox be a Committee to Make a Severation of sd list for yee respective Boxes, which sd Committee immediately did & reported at sd Meeting that they had assign'd.

Then the moderator Put the Question whether the Severation or report of Sd Committee Should be Accepted and it Passed in the Affirmative. Voted that the Selectmen Act as they think Proper with Regard to Selling the land to M' Edwards Mentioned in the war- rant in this meeting. Then the moderator declared the meeting to be dissolved and it was dissolved Accordingly-

Voted that the Sum of Eighty pounds be Granted, As- sessed & Paid into the Town Treasurery for the defray- ing the Town's Just debts the year Current.


Voted that Capt Jacob Dodge Deacon Samuel Tarbox, and Doct" William Fairfield be a Committee Impower'd on the Part of this Town to join with Such Committee as are or may be appointed & Impower'd by the Town of Topsfield, in Straitning or altering the line be Sd Towns as they when Convened on that Occasion Shall think Necesary for the Convenience of both. The Question Put Whether A man Should be Sent to Boston as an agent to Perfer a Petetion to the General Court next Sessions Praying An Abatement of interest of our Province Tax in year 1765: (to be Paid this year because no Orders from Sd Court to do it before) and it Pass'd in the Negative.


Then M" Moderator declared this Town Meeting to be dissolved, and it was dissolved accordingly.


Pursuant to a Vote of the Town at their last meeting, we the Subscribers have in Cooderation of Seven shillings and two Pence halfpenny, Sold unto Benjamin Edwards a Small piece of Land Lying in the Highway Adjoining to Sd Edwards land, Near Capt Jacob Dodges, Leaving the highway better than two Poles wide.

Voted that the Reports of the Several Committees with Regard to the Settlement of the Line's between the Towns of Wenham, Beverly & Topsfield be accepted; and that the Same be recorded


That the Sixth Article in the warrant of this meeting be dismiss'd


voted That the List or Lists of Taxes to the Highways by the Surveyors duly returned or that shall hereafter be returned to the Selectmen not Satisfied, and Paid : be by sd Selectmen forthwith Properly Committed to the Con- stable or Constables for the Time being in order that the money may be by them Collected of Such Person or Per- sons as by Sd List, or Lists appear to have Either Neg- lected or Refused to Pay and Satisfy their Respective proportion wherat they are respectively Assembled, and Set in sd List or Lists, to sd Highways: agreeable to the former votes of this Town Respecting the repairing and Amending the Highways within the Same. And that the Selectmen for the Time being Proceed in Like manner in that Case for the Future. And the money so Collected to go into yee Town Treasury for the use of sd Town. - Voted the Selectmen Afford to Thos Senter Necesary Re- lief as one of the Poor of this Town.


Voted that the Sum of Fifty Pounds be Granted for the Repairing and the Amending the Highways the year Cur- rent and that the Same be assessed as usual.


Voted that the tenth Article in the warrant this meeting be dismissed.

Whereas the Lines between Wenham and Topsfield, are very Intregate, and the bounds being in such boggy Mea- dows that they could not git at them when they Peram- bulated; Therefore the sd Towns of of Wenham & Tops- field have Impower'd us the subscribers to Straiten the Lines between sd Town, or make Such Alterations as we think necessary we having met for the Purpose aforsd

and have altered and Straitned sª Lines and made monu- ments as followeth viz - begining at a Stake and Stones near Wenham Causey (so Called) being abound between Wenham, Topsfield, & Danverse From Thence running North Thirty Six degrees, and a half east one hundred & Seventeen Poles, and a half, to a Stake & Stones by awall. Thence North fifteen degrees east Eighty & two Poles, and a half, to a Stake and Stones at yee Northeast Corner of Robinson's Island (so Called) Thence North Twenty degrees & a half east Sixty Poles to a Stake and Stones, at the Southwest Corner of Wenham Island (so Called) Thence North fifty Eight degrees and a half east -Twenty-Nine Pole to the River, at the Northwest Cor- ner of sd Wenham Island. Thence by the River to Ip- swich Line.

At a Meeting of the Inhabitants of Wenham duly warned and Regularly Assembled at Our Meeting-house on Tues- day the third day of April Anno Domini 1770


Nath11 Brown Esqr was Chosen moderator


Voted That a Grammar School be Constantly kept in this Town the year Ensuing.


Voted that Provision be made for the support of the Same.


Voted That a Committee be Chosen to Provide a School- Master, and to apportion sd school According to the Tax or Rate-Bill in this Town


Voted That D' William Fairfield Ensign John Friend, & mª Stephen Dodge, be a Committee to Apportion sd School as abovesd. - Then the moderator Declared the Meeting to be dissolved & so it was
