A small village or hamlet in the township of Denver, Newaygo county, 16 miles north of Newaygo the county town, and nine north- west of Morgan Station, on the Big Rapids Branch of the C. & M. L. S R. R. The White river, upon which the village is located, gives it a good water power ; and a saw mill, shingle mill and grist mill are operated. Lumber, flour and shingles are the principal exports. AKRON.
A postoffice in the township of Akron, Tuscola county, 14 miles northwest of Caro, the county seat, and about 100 from Detroit. Vassar, 20 miles southwest on the Bay City branch of the M. C. R. R., is the nearest railroad point. It is on the stage route from Sebewaing to Vassar, by which it receives a daily mail. The surrounding country is adapted to farming, but as yet only lumber, staves and hoops are shipped. Richard A. Waldi, postmaster.
ALABASTER.
A village of about 300 inhabitants in Iosco county. It is situated on the west shore of Saginaw Bay, 512 miles south of Tawas City, 163 from Detroit, and 35 northeast of Standish, on the Mackinaw Div M. C. R. R., its nearest railroad point. Gypsum underlies the town in great quantities, and with staves, forms a leading article of export. Express, Holt's and American. Telegraph, Western Union. Stage to Standish daily during the winter. ALBION.
A flourishing village on the Michigan Central railroad, 20 miles west of Jackson, and 12 miles east of Marshall. The Lan- sing branch of the L. S. & M. S. R. R. also passes through the place, by which route it is 22 miles north of Jonesville and 37 south of Lansing, Albion is in the castern part of Calhoun county, in a fine agricultural region. Fruit and grain are the leading products marketed. The Kalamazoo river affords a good water power. The manufacturing in- terests of Albion embrace one extensive agri- cultural implement factory, which turns out 10,000 plows, 1,000 sulky horse rakes and 600 cultivators per annum ; an extensive tan- nery. 2 flouring mills, 2 sash and door fac- tories, and I wind mill manufactory.
The college, under the control of the Methodist Episcopal denomination, is the predominating feature of the village. This institution is now on a much stronger foot. ing than formerly, having secured an endow. ment of $200,000. The college numbers about 200 students.
There are five union school buildings and six churches in Albion, and it supports two weekly newspapers, the Recorder ( Republi- (an), published by Hall, Thompson & Co., who also publish the College Annalast ; and
the Mirror (Democratic), published by L. W. Cole. There are two hotels, the Aibion house and the Exchange hotel, one bank, the National Exchange, capital $100,000; and 2 private banks. There are offices of the Western Union Telegraph and United States and American Express companies here. Mail daily.

A lumber village on the shore of Lake Huron. in Alcona county, 9 miles north of Harrisville, 29 south of Alvena, and 200 from Detroit. Standish, on the Mackinaw division of the M C R R, 90 miles south- west, is its railroad point. Population 125. Lumber and cordwood are the chief ship- ments. ALGANSEE.
A postoffice and small place in the town- ship of Algansee, Branch county. It is 12 miles southwest of Coldwater, the county seat, 614 south of Quincy and 51% north of State line, on the Fort Wayne, Jackson & Saginaw railroad. Wheat. corn and hogs are shipped. ALLEGAN.
The county seat of Allegan county, is a flourishing incorporated village, of about 3,000 inhabitants, situated on the Kalamazoo river, about 3 miles south of the center of the county. It is 25 miles northwest of Kalamazoo, 30 south of Grand Rapids, and 168 west of Detroit. Two railroads pass through Allegan, the M. L. S. R. R., extending from Battle Creek to Muskegon, and the G. R. branch of the L. S. &. M. S. Ky. A third road is in process of comple- tun from Mansfield, O., to Allegan via Coldwater and Battle Creek.
The village is situated mainly upon a pen- insula, formed by a horse shoe bend of the Kalamazoo river. It is surrounded by high table lands, extending back into the country and having a productive soil. There are several spacious business blocks, built of stone and brick, and having fronts of good style and finish, Ample accommodations are the furnished, not only for merchandising and other industrial pursuits, but for profes- sonal offices.
