A village of about 400 population in the southeast part of Genesee county. It is dis- tant from Flint, the county seat, 14 miles, and is 5 from Grand Blanc on the F. & P. M. Ry, its shipping point. ATTICA.


An attractive village of 1,200 inhabitants, is situated on the C. & L. H. R R., seven miles east of Lapeer, 3S from Port Huron, and 54 from Detroit. It is in Attica town- ship, Lapeer county, in a beautiful, undu- lating section of country, interspersed with small lakes and woodlands. The soil is unsurpassed for farming purposes, grain, hay and fruit being the staple crops. Attica was settled in 1853 as a lumbering village. It now has three saw mills, two shingie mills, two planing mills, one flouring mill and one tannery. Lumber, shingles, staves, flour and farm products are shipped. AUGUSTA.


An incorporated village of about Soo in- habitants on the Michigan Central railroad, in the northeastern part of Kalamazoo county. It is 14 miles east of Kalamazoo, and 130 from Detroit. The Kalamazoo river affords water power. The manufacturing in- terests include one flouring mill, one foundry, three carriage shops, and some others. There are three churches, Baptist, Congregationalist and Methodist, and a good hotel, the Au- gusta House. The chief articles of ship- ment are flour, wood, wheat, pork, poultry and live stock. A port of Lake Huron, situated at the mouth of the Au Sable river, in Oscoda township, losco county. It was first settled in IS19 as a village, and incorporated in IS72. The population at present numbers about 1,500. On account of the vast pine forests in the immediate neighborhood, the


lumber interest engages the larger share of the attention of the people, agriculture being only followed to a limited extent. There are 6 large saw mills engaged in the manu- facture of lumber and square timber; I sash and blind factory, 3 stores, 3 hotels, 3 churches, I bank and some other interests. Distance from Tawas City, the county seat, 15 miles, and from Detroit, 175; during the season of navigation shipments are made vic Bay City. Lumber, timber, salt and fish are exported. BANGOR.


A prosperous village and station on the C & M LS R R, in the township of Bangor, Van Buren county, 18 miles northwest of Paw Paw the county seat, 54 above New Buffalo, 121 from Chicago and about 160 from De. troit. It is situated on Black river, II miles above its mouth at South Haven, this stream affords excellent water privileges. The man- ufactories are a flouring mill, two saw mills, a woolen mill, and an iron furnace. The Bangor Furnace Company, of which A. B. Hough is president, turned out in 1876 11,604 tons of pig iron; the furnace run 41,917 charges, consuming 1,047,925 bushels of coal, and 35.844,610 pounds of ors,
