GREENWOOD.


A village of Edwards township, Ogemaw county, 112 miles from Greenwood station, on the Mackinaw division of the M C R R., and 451/2 miles above Wenona. This is a new town in the midst of a pine and hemlock forest, and contains one saw mill, and about 50 people. G. W. Hotchkiss, postmaster.

GRINDSTONE CITY.


A settlement of 200 persons in Port Austin township, Huron county, on the shore of Jake Huron, 22 miles northeast of Bad Axe. the county seat, and about go north of Port Huron. The place settled about 1850, takes its name from extensive quarries of very supe- rior stone for grind and whet stones found here. There are factories of scythe and grind stones and a sawmill in operation here. Grind stones, scythe stones, building stone and cedar posts are shipped. Stages run to Port Huron and Bay City. GROSSE ISLE.


A large island in the Detroit river, 20 miles below Detroit. It is crossed by the Canada Southern R R, and is fast becoming a popular summer resort. A number of merchants and professional gentlemen doing business in Detroit have their residence- here. There are three hotels, one Catholic and two Episcopal churches on the island. Grapes and other fruits are extensively grown, and the river on all sides affords ex- cellent fishing grounds. Grain, hay, wood, stone, grapes, apples, pears and white fish ate staple articles of shipment. Population, about 700. Telegraph, Western Union. Ex- press. American. Mail daily: A. M. A somewhat fashionable suburb of Detroit, situated in the township of Grosse Point, Wayne county, on the shore of lake St Clair, S miles northeast of the city. There are perhaps 900 inhabitants in the village, which is somewhat scattered. John B. Gravier, justice of the peace.


GROSVENOR.


Also known as Blissfield Junction, a post- office at the crossing of the L S & M S and the Chicago & Canada Southern railways, 112 miles of west Blissfield. It is in Palmyra town- ship Lenawee county, 9 miles southeast of Adrian. Its only importance is as a place of transfer between the two railroads. Mail daily. George Sparrow, postmaster.

A postoffice and village in Prairieville township, in the southwest corner of Barry county, 14 miles northwest of Kalamazoo, its railroad point and 22 from Hastings the seat of justice. GURNEE.


A postoffice in the extreme northwest cor- ner of Mason county, 9 miles south of Man- istee. It has a daily mail.


HADLEY.


A village of 300 inhabitants, in Hadley township, Lapeer county, 12 miles southwest of Lapeer, S west of Metamora, on the Bay City division of the M CR R, and 54 from Detroit. It is on Clinton creek, and has 2 flouring mills. 2 saw mills, 1 planing mill and a foundry, 2 churches, Baptist and Methodist, and a good graded school. Had- ley is surrounded by a good farming country and ships grain, potatoes, wool, apples, bu :- ter and eggs. Stages run to Farmer's Creek, Metamora, Goodrich and Grand Blanc daily. with mails. R. S. HANCOCK.


This large and flourishing village is situa- ted on the northern shore of Portage lake, in the northern part of Houghton county. It is directly opposite, and i mile south from Houghton, the county seat, with which it is connected by steam ferry.


Hancock was platted in 1858, since which its growth and prosperity has been steady and rapid. It is the location of the famous Quincy Copper mine, one of the most pros- perous in the Upper Peninsula, it being second only to the wonderful Calumet and Hecla, The Franklin and the Pewabic. operated under one management as the Franklin- Pewabic mine, are within the village limits. The amount of capital invested in these mines, with the dividends paid and the products for 1875 have been as follows :

Like Houghton, Hancock is situated on a side hill which rises to a height of goo feet above the lake. It contains the extensive stamping mills of the Quincy mine, and 4 other stamp mills belonging to different mines in the vicinity, one large foundry and machine shop, copper smelting works, 2 steam saw


mills and 4 churches, Congregational, Metho- dist, Catholic and Lutheran, and a large graded school.


Hancock is the southern terminus of the Mineral Range railway, a narrow or 3 foot guage road, 121/2 miles in length extending to Calumet, and a road, which for its financial success, has hardly been equaled by any rail- road in the country.


Hancock contains a population of about 3,000. It is 36 miles northwest of L'Anse, the terminus of the M. H. & O, R. R., and about 100 from Marquette. Mail daily. Telegraph, Northwestern. Express, Ameri- can. Thomas. N. Lee, postmaster.

A postoffice on the line between the town- ships of Jamestown and Georgetown, Ottawa county, 412 miles southwest of Grandville, on the mail route to Holland, and 30 miles southeast of Grand Haven.
