DIAMONDALE.
A village situated on the L. S. & M. S. Ry, in Windsor township, Eaton county, 12 miles northeast of Charlotte, the seat of jus- tice, S southwest of Lansing and too from Detroit. It is on Grand river which furnishes a good water power. 2 saw mills, 1 flouring mill, I planing mill, and a hub factory con- stitute the manufacturing interests. A good farming country surrounds the village and lumber, wood, grain and live stock are ship- ped. It was settled about 1855 and has 300 inhabitants. Telegraph, Western Union.

R. and 27 north of Detroit. It was settled in 1851, is surrounded by rich, level farming land and has 2 planing mills, I cider mill, 3 waggon shops and a Methodist church. A village of some 300 inhabitants, on the Kalamazoo division of the L. S. & M. S. Ry. It is in Dorr township, in the north- eastern part of Allegan county, 14 miles from Allegan, 18 south of Grand Rapids and 180 from Detroit. Dorr is in a fine farming country. It has 2 saw mills, I flour- ing mill, I Congregational church, 2 hotels, and 4 general stores. Wheat, flour, pork, lumber and stave bolts are the leading ship- ments. Village platted in 1869. An incorporated village of 600 popula- tion, on the Kalamazoo river, near its mouth and opposite Saugatuck. It is in Saugatuck township, Allegan county, 22 miles west of Allegan and 6 miles from New Richmond, on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., its railroad point. The village was platted in IS61 and incorporated in 1870. It contains I tannery, I sash and blind factory, I grist mill, 2 steam saw mills, a neat Methodist church and a graded Union school. A small place in Dexter township, Wash- tenaw county. ( See Base Lake.)
DOWAGIAC.
The flourishing village of Dowagiac is situated on the stream from which it takes its name, at the intersection of the four townships of Silver Creek, Wayne, Pokagon and LaGrange, in Cass county, 10 miles northwest of Cassopolis, the county seat. It is on the M. C. R. R., 12 miles east of Miles, 179 west of Detroit, and 105 from Chicago. It was settled in IS4S, on the completion of the M. C. R. R., and incor- porated as a village ten years later. It was burned down in 1864, but speedily rebuilt. The population now numbers about 2, 500. The country around consists of prairie and oak openings. Wheat, corn, potatoes, fruit and live stock are raised. Water power is derived from Dowagiac creek for manu- facturing purposes, 3 flouring mills, t planing mill, t saw mill and a foundry being ope-

A rising incorporated village of 1200 in- habitants in the township of Dundee, Mon- roe county. It is eligibly located on the north branch of the river Raisin, and on the C & C S Ry, at the point of crossing of the projected Toledo, Ann Arbor and Northern. It is 15 miles northwest of Monroe, 27 west of Trenton and 48 from Detroit. The vil- lage is pleasantly situated upon high table land in the midst of a splendid farming country and contains 3 flouring mills, 2 saw mills, 2 pulp factories, I planing mill, I stave factory, I cheese factory, I paper mill and I tannery. The Dundee Enterprise a weekly republican paper is published and there are 4 churches, Baptist, Congregational, Luthe- ran and Methodist. The school accommo- dations are excellent. A postoffice and station on the. M. L. S. R. R. in Heath township, Allegan county, 8 miles northwest of Allegan, 33 from Kalama- zoo and 175 from Detroit. Water power is derived from Bear creek, a branch of the Kalamazoo river. The surrounding country, which is level, is tolerably good farming land. Lumber, lath, shingles and berries are shipped. It has 2 saw and shingle mills and a Methodist church. Settled 1866. Popu- lation 170. Telegraph, W. Union. Express, U. States. Mail daily. Wm. Scott, post- master.

A village of 200 inhabitants in Duplain township, Clinton county, locally called Mapleton. It is on Maple river, 9 miles northeast of St. Johns, and 4 north of Shep- a:1,ville, on the D. & M. R. R., its usual shipping station. It was settled in 1835 ; Fas a good.water power, and one grist mill, a finnery and 2 churches, Methodist and Iusciples. Wheat, barley, clover seed, but-

A village of 125 population in Eagle township, Clinton county. It is a station on the D. L. & N. R R, and is 16 miles south- west of St Johns, the county seat, IS north- west of Lansing and 103 from Detroit. It is in a good farining region near the Looking Glass river. EAGLE HARBOR.
An incorporated village of about 400 in- habitants in Eagle Harbor township, Ke- weenaw county, 8 miles northeast of Eagle River, the county seat. By water it is dis- tant about 660 miles from Detroit, and about 700 from Chicago. Its nearest approach by rail is Calumet, 20 miles south. It is situated in a mountainous and rocky region of coun- try growing nothing but potatoes, turnips, grass and oats, and exporting copper, silver, potash and green hides. It is the shipping port for the Central and Copper Falls mines two of the best mines in the Keweenaw district. It has several hotels and stores, a weekly newspaper, the Keweenaw Herald, Methodist and Catholic churches, schools, etc. Settled 1845. Incorporated 1874. A daily line of stages run to Copper Harbor, Eagle River and Houghton, and all points east and south. It has a daily mail. Justin Shapley, postmaster. The Mineral Range telegraph reaches this village.
