FLINT.
A thrifty and attractive little city of about 7,000 inhabitants, is the county seat of Gen- esee county. It occupies an elevated site on the Flint river, at the intersection of the F. & P. M. Ry. and the Chicago & Lake Hu- ron R. R., 66 miles west of Port Huron, 6.4 northwest of Detroit, 49 northeast of Lan- sing and 34 south of Saginaw. The site of the present city was first settled about the year IS20, the village platted in IS31, and the act incorporating it as a city passed in 1855. The principal business interest of
Flint is the manufacture of lumber, for which there are 9 mills in operation. The total capacity of these mills is about 100 .- 000,000 feet of sawed lumber per annum, besides large quantities of lath and shingles. An extensive business is also done in dressed lumber, sash, doors, blinds, etc., 10 or more establishments being engaged in this line. There are 2 foundries and machine shops, that of Messrs. Kimball & Co. being largely engaged in the manufacture of malleable iron castings, machinery of all kinds, steam engines, etc. There are also 2 flouring mills, I paper mill, I stave mill, 3 breweries, 3 furniture factories, 3 brick-yards and sev- eral carriage and wagon factories, besides a number of other establishments of minor importance.
The educational advantages offered by Flint are not surpassed by any city in the State. . It has a commodious central- high school building, erected at a cost of $100,000 and 5 ward schools, with 1,600 enrolled scholars. The Roman Catholics also have a large brick school building. The state insti- tution for the education of the deaf, dumb and blind is located here. It is a handsome structure, surrounded by about 40 acres of beautiful grounds. Among the public build- ings the Court House is a beautiful and costly edifice. The churches are I Baptist. I Free Will Baptist, I Congregational, 1 Episcopal, I Evangelical, 2 Methodist, I Presbyterian and I Roman Catholic, all of which are fully in keeping with the other institutions of the city.
It has a good jail, a well organized fire department, a ladies' library association, in- corporated in 1853, and a scientific institute incorporated in the same year.
The press is ably represented by 5 weekly newspapers, the Democrat, the Sunday Deme- crat, the Wolverine Citizen, the Journal and the Flint Globe. A daily paper will, doubt- less, be started soon. There are 2 banks of issue-the Citizens' National and the First National-also one savings bank and several good hotels. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American. Washington O'Don.
