BAY PORT.


A small hamlet on the eastern shore of Saginaw bay, 41 miles northeast of Bay City and 26 southwest of Port Austin, with both of which places it has stage communication. It is in Caseville township, Huron county. in a farmning and lumbering country ; and has two saw mills and a salt block. Lumber, salt, shingles and cedar posts are shipped. A village of 500 inhabitants in the town- ship of Otisco, Ionia county, 12 miles from Ionia, the county seat, and three miles west of Kiddville station on the D L & N R R. It is on Flat river from which a very fine water power is obtained. Flour, lumber, furniture, wooden ware, doors, sash, etc., are manufactured, and with grain and apples form considerable shipments. There are 3 churches, Baptist, Methodist and Christian, and a union school. Belding was settled in 1870, and is a good business point. BELLE RIVER.


A small settlement in Berlin township, St. Clair county. It is situated on Belle river, whence it takes its name, and is 24 miles west of Port Huron, the county seat. The surrounding country is good, and produces grain, potatoes, fruits, pork, butter, eggs and cheese. Armada, on the Air Line railroad, 9 miles distant, is its shipping point. It is . on the stage route from Capac to Armada, and has a tri-weekly mail. Population about 100. F. W. Frost, postmaster.

Ils nearest railroad point at present is Denton, on the M. C. R. R., 412 miles north. The manufactures are flour, lumber, staves, heading, cider and vinegar. A village of about 150 inhabitants, situat- ed on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. at the mouth of Stony creek, and near the southwest corner of Oceana county. It is 16 miles southwest of Hart, the county seat, and 11 from Shelby on the C. and M. L. S. R. R., its railroad point. Farming is carried on to some extent in the vicinity. BENTON HARBOR.


A thriving village of 1,500 inhabitants, located at the mouth of the Paw Paw river, on Lake Michigan. It is the center of the great fruit growing district, and the most im- portant fruit shipping point on the lake ; 200.000 basket of peaches, 150,000 crates of berries, and 50,000 barrels of apples, having been shipped during the season of 1876. The village is situated in Benton township, Ber- rien county, and is on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 16 miles northwest of Berrien Springs, 23 north of New Buffalo, 60 by water, or 100 by rail from Chicago. Excellent water power is afforded by the Paw Paw river, ap- plied to I flouring mill, I saw mill, and I bung factory. The place has also one wash board factory, three fruit package factories, one canning factory, and an Alden fruit evaporator. The neigh- boring country embraces one of the most productive and densely populated portions of the state, abounding in excellent timber for building or manufacturing pur- poses. There are 3 handsome churches, representing the Baptist, Methodist and Universalist denominations, a fine union school building, and numerous tasteful pri- vate residences. A ship canal, costing $50,- oco, and other public works are evidences of the enterprise and culture of the citizens. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, Ain- sim. The county seat of Benzie county, a village of 250 inhabitants, 712 miles due east from Frankfort and 35 southwest from Traverse City. Grand Traverse college, a Congregational institu- tion, is located here. Cold Spring creek and Walker creek afford water power, utilized by two saw mills, a grist mill and a handle fac tory. BERLIN.


A village on the line of the D & M R R, in Wright township, Ottawa county, 22 miles east of Grand Haven, 9 west of Grand Rapids and 167 from Detroit. Berlin has two churches, Baptist and Methodist, a grist mill, steam woolen mill and some smaller interests. Settled 1849. Population 300. A postoffice in the township and county of Berrien, 4 miles east of Berrien Springs, the county seat, and 10 north of Niles its shipping station. BERRIEN SPRINGS.


The seat of justice for Berrien county, is situated on the St Joseph river 25 miles above its mouth, in Oronoko township, near the geographical center of the county. It is Io miles northwest of Niles, 15 southeast of St Joseph and 201 from Detroit. A rich and well tilled section of country surrounds the place affording it a thriving local trade. The churches are three, Lutheran, Methodist and United Brethren. A planing mill is the only industry ; and fruit, lumber and live stock form the shipments. Population, S50. Stage to St Joseph and Niles daily. Two weekly newspapers the Berrien Springs Era and the Berrien County Journal are pub- lished. Telegraph, Western Union. Ex- press, American. Mail daily.
