Staves, wood, posts and telegraph poles are shipped. The place was first settled in March 1875 by Charles R Kniffin, and has a population of 100, within the circuit of the postoffice. A village and station on the F & P M Ry, in Saginaw county. (See Fay).


FREEPORT.


A small place in Bowne township, Kent county, near the southern line. Mail is received at Fillmore, Barry county.

A small place on the Sable river in the township of Free Soil, Mason county. It is 20 iniles northeast of Ludington, 11 north of Amber on the F & P M Ry, and to south of Manistee. Ship to Ludington. A stage runs to Manistee weekly. Timber and farm

FREMONT CENTER.


One of the most thrifty towns in Newaygo county, is located on the line of Dayton and Sheridan townships and on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 23 miles northeast of Muskegon and 32 southwest of Big Rapids. It is 9 miles northwest of Newaygo, the judicial seat of the county. There are here 5 saw mills, I flouring mill, I handle mill, I stave mill, I planing mill, I shingle mill, a large tannery, 2 churches, Methodist and Congre- gational, a flourishing weekly newspaper, the Fremont Times, of which W. S. Platt is publisher, 8 or 10 general stores, several groceries, hardware, jewelry and other trades. A foundry and machine shop is one of the chief wants of the village and would doubt- less do well. The population of Fremont Center is now 1, 100. Stages run to Ies- pería and Newaygo . daily. A popular watering place at the head of Spring Lake, in the southern part of Mus- kegon county. It is a station on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 4 miles northeast of Grand Haven, and 10 south of Muskegon. Fruit- port was settled in 1869, and has a popula- tion of about 250. . It is the center of one of the best fruit sections in the State. By a disastrous fire which occurred here recently, 2 large hotels and some other valuable pro- perty was destroyed. A small steamer makes 4 trips daily to Grand Haven and intermedi- ate points. A flourishing village of 300 inhabitants on the D. & M. R. R., in Gaines township, Genesee county. It is 20 miles southwest of Flint, and 63 from Detroit, and is in a hard- wood country, the chief agricultural products of which are wheat, oats and grass ._ Grain, staves and flour (the latter from Byron) are shipped. A village of 100 inhabitants in the town- ship of Ganges, county of Allegan. It is on the shore of lake Michigan, 5 miles west of Fennville, a station of the C. & M. L. S. R. R., and 20 west of Allegan, the county seat. Fruit growing is the chief interest in this region, and apples, peaches and small fruits are the only shipments. . A postoffice at Hale's Bay. A settlement of perhaps 150 inhabitants, chiefly farmers, in Nahma township, Delta county. It is on the east shore of Big Bay de Noquet, 10 miles north of Fayette, and 30 northeast of Escanaba. To the north the timber is pine and hemlock, to the south, hardwood with good farming land. Potatoes, cordwood, cedar posts and fish are shipped. It has a special mail supply. J. E, Streeter, post- master.

A postoffice and small village in Livingston township, Otsego county. It is the northern terminus of the Mackinaw division of the M. C. R. R., and is 10 miles north of Otsego Lake the county seat and 123 north of Bay City. Settled 1874. Population 50. The station was originally known as Barnes. The country here is gently rolling, with a gravelly loam soil, and the timber is nearly all sugar maple. The only article of shipment as yet is birdseye and curled maple lumber. . A postoffice on Grand river at the point where it enters Ottawa county, and at the mouth of Rush creek. It is about 8 miles southwest of Grand Rapids and 30 southeast of Grand Haven. GIBRALTAR.


A ship building village at the mouth of the Detroit river. It is in the township of Brownstown, Wayne county, 3 miles below Trenton, 20 south of Detroit, and 112 east of Gibraltar station on the Canada Southern Ry. It is surrounded by good farming lands, growing fruit and grains. The village was first settled in 1830 and now has 300 inhabi- tants. The principal business interest is the shipyard of Linn & Craig. Lumber, wood and staves are shipped. Gibraltar has a daily mail. R. W. Linn, postmaster.
