HILLSDALE.
A thriving city of about 4, 500 inhabitants is the county seat of Hillsdale county. Itis situated at the junction of the D. H. & S. W. R. R. with the L. S. & M. S. Ry, 91 miles from Detroit, 30 south of Jackson, 65 northwest of Toledo and 178 east of Chicago. The St. Joseph river passes through the city, but as it has its rise only 2 or 3 miles above it affords little or no water power. The country, as the name of the county and town indicate, is pleasingly diversified with hills and dales. The city derives much of its importance from its being the center of one of the best agricultural counties in the state. The wheat trade particularly is very large. The manufact- uring interests of the town, which are not extensive, consist of 2 flouring mills, 2 foundries, 2 sash and blind factories, an extension table factory and an edge tool factory.
The city schools are first-class, consisting of a good Union and four ward schools.
One of the chief interests of the town is the Free Will Baptist college located here, and known as Hillsdale College. This institution, the only one this society has, was originally located at Spring Arbor, eight miles southwest of Jackson, but was subse- quently removed to this place, where it was formally opened in November, 1855. It is beautifully located on what is now known as College Hill, a tract of 20 acres of land, lying about 100 rods north of the city proper, donated to the society by Mr. Black- mar. The institution is in a flourishing condition, has an efficient faculty, and an attendance of about 400 students.
The churches consist of Methodist, Pres- byterian, Catholic, Episcopal, Adventist and Free Will Baptist, the latter being the finest church edifice in town. The Baptists have an organization but no building.
The local press consists of the Standard. republican, the Democrat and the Weekly Business, independent. all in a prosperous condition. It also has two National banks. Settled 1832. Reached by the railroad, 1843. Incorporated a city, 1869. Detroit & Hillsdale railroad completed, 1871. Stages east to Wheatland, Cambria Mills and Church's Corners daily, and south to Jefferson, Fron. tier and Ransom semi-weekly. Express, American and United States. Telegraph, Western Union and Atlantic & Pacific. Eli Van Valkenburg, postmaster.
