CHARLOTTE.

Charlotte is a city of 3,000 inhabitants, situated in the center of the county of Eaton, one of the most flourishing counties in the State, of which it is the seat of justice. It is built upon a beautiful prairie skirted with woods, a lovely spot, and the

" Loveliest village of the plain."

The Grand Rapids Division of the Michigan Central R R, crosses the Chicago & Lake Huron R R, at this point, affording competition in traffic both east and west. No finer stores are to be found in any city of its size in the west, and its business nien are live, active and thriving.

Charlotte has 2 excellent hotels, 2 banks, 2 newspapers-the Republican and Leader- 5 churches, excellent school buildings, and some fine residences. In the manufacturing line it has two flouring mills, a large handie factory, which has also recently commenced upon an extensive scale the manufacturing of Willard's patent double stave barrels. The Charlotte Manufacturing Company. with a capital of $25,000, do an immense business in manufacturing staves. The Gip- son fanning mill is also made here. There

are three foundries and machine shops, and three extensive planing mills and sash. door and blind factories. The city has also a valuable public circulating library, managed by an efficient board of directors, and gen- erously patronized by the people. The Eaton County Agricultural Society grounds are within the city. They are nicely ar- ranged and one of their most marked fea- tures is a grove of about ten acres through one corner of which flows Battle Creek river. The county jail, situated here, is the admira- tion of all who see it.

Charlotte became a city in 1871, and elected Hon. E. S. Lacey its first mayor, to whom it is much indebted for the excellence of its governmental regulations. During that year many public improvements were made, and the like have steadily increased to the present ' time. It has a steam fire department and one of Silsby's third size engines, and one of the most expensively uniformed and well trained cornet bands in the State.

No healthier place can be found and its inhabitants are moral and cultivated.

The Western Union Telegraph and Amer- ican Express furnish telegraph and express facilities. F. E. Leiter, postmaster.
