TRADE AND MANUFACTURES.

Commercially, Detroit makes a splendid record. Situated on the Detroit river, she is at the gateway of the lakes, and the white winged craft flit past her almost every Inin- ute, calling, as they go, to pay some tribute to the favorite city. Fifty years ago, we had but one dock, but it accommodated all our

trade, and not a vessel that navigated the lakes was owned in Detroit. Now, Detroit owns 170 sailing vessels of 27,721 tons, and 40 barges of 9,686 tons. In 1820 the Walk- in-the-Water, the first steamer that ever came upon the river, visited Detroit, aston- ishing the Indians who gathered upon the bank of the stream, frightened at the monster which, they explained, breathed out of his back. Now, Detroit owns 127 steamers, carrying 39,875 tons. Fifty years ago, the arrival of a vessel was an event of interest. To-day, a sail or steam craft passes the city once in six minutes during the season of navigation, and over 30 steam craft are fre- quently in sight from the deck of the ferry in mid-stream. Fifty years ago, six or seven

stores transacted all our mercantile business. Now, we have over 1,400 stores in the var- ious branches of trade, while the exports of this port for the year ending July 1, 1876, amounted to $2,645,375, and the imports to $1,456,342.

We have four banks of discount with a capital of $2,200,000, several private bank- ing firms, and five savings banks, with a capital of $575,000. The thrift of our peo- ple is shown by the fact that these savings banks hold over four and a half millions of money chiefly belonging to laboring peop' Our manufactures are extensive, and to credited with much of the prosperity of t city. There are 171 manufactories of varic

kinds, including the great works, such as are connected with stove, furniture and car making, and 823 shops, where smaller en- terprises are carried on. The wholesale trade is estimated at over thirty millions an- nually, while the produce trade is about $25,000,000 a year. Iron and lumber enter largely into our manufactories, and some of the heaviest operators in cach branch are located here. The iron work of this vicinity comprises about 20,000 tons of rolled, and 20,000 tons of pig iron, annually. The re. ceipts of iron aggregate 13,137,SSS pounds, shipments 8,000,364. Of the 28,000,000 fect f lumber cut yearly in Michigan, a laige roportion is the operation of Detroit capital.

* The total production of the nine mills of the city for the past year has been about 400,000 barrels.

Statistics show that we have our vanities also. For the year ending July 1, 1876, our tobacconists produced 4,150,075 pounds of tobacco, upon which a revenue tax of $996,017 was paid. Our 150 cigar factories produced 26,581, 830 cigars, and paid $159,- 490.98 thereon. Our 33 brewers brewed 112,057 barrels of beer and paid $112,057 thereon. And our single distiller paid $107,886.60 on 119,874 gallons of whiskey he distilled.

Thus it will be seen that while it took two centuries to lay the foundations, it has required but another 50 years to bring this little settlement of 1826 up to a great, pros- Perous metropolitan city.
