BARAGA.
A mission village on the west shore of Ke- weenaw Bay, in Baraga township, Houghton county. It is 30 miles due south from Houghton, and 4 by land or 2 across the bay from L'Anse. Lumber, shingles, lath, fish and furs are shipped. The place was settled in 1840 by the American Fur Company, and named in honor of the late esteemed Catho. lic Bishop Father Baraga. Population 100. BARNARD.
A small place in Marion township, Charle- voix county, 6 miles south of Charlevoix, the county seat, and 20 west of Petoskey, its railroad point via the G R & I R R. There is one saw mill here, for which power is de- rived from Burns' creek. Settled 1866. Pop- ulation 50. First rate wheat, oats, potatoes and hay are grown, but lumber forms the chief shipment. Mail tri-weekly. Bernard Burns, postmaster.

BATH.
A village in Bath township, in the south. east part of Clinton county. It is a station on the Saginaw division of the M C R R., S miles north of Lansing, and 19 southwest of Owosso. It is 20 miles south of St John's. The surrounding country is rolling and adapted for farming, wheat being the staple product. Some hardwood lumber is manu- factured. There are 2 churches, Methodist and Baptist. Population 250. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American. Mail daily. A. H. Clark, postmaster.

BATTLE CREEK.
The largest and most prosperous city of Calhoun county. It is located in the north- western part of the county, at the junction of Battle creek with the Kalamazoo river. It is the point of intersection of the Michigan Central and the Chicago and Lake Huron railways, being 121 miles west of Detroit, 163 from Chicago, 45 southwest from Lan. sing and 13 west of Marshall, the county seat. The place was first settled about 40 years ago, was incorporated as a village in IS50 and as a city in 1859. The corporation is two miles square and is divided into four wards. The population, which has increased during the past two years, is now reckoned at 7,000.
Battle Creek is essentially a manufacturing point. Besides three Pouring mills, an ex- tensive patent fruit packing house and two furniture factories, there are the Nichols & Shepherd Manufacturing Co., builders of

thrashing machines, capital $500,000; the Butle Creek Machinery Co., capital $30,000; the Upton Manufacturing Co., agricultural in, lements, capital $100.000; two carriage manufactories, besides other manufacturing concerns in various branches.
Battle Creek is the headquarters of the Shenth Day Adventist denomination; and Here they have a college building, costing $35.000, and a publishing house with a capi- til of $100,000, from which emanate several periodicals, besides tracts, books and pamph- lets, printed in five different languages and circulating in all parts of the world. The Adventists are an exceedingly prosperous and happy people.
There are two banks, the First National, capital $100,000, and the City Bank, capital $50,000. The leading hotel is the Potter House, kept by Henry Potter. The Briley Hotel, formerly the Morse House, is a well kept hotel. The public halls are the Opera - House, Centennial Hall and the City Hall. Battle Creek boasts of the finest school building in the State, its cost being about $\0,000. There are some nine churches, the leading ones being the Congregational and Presbyterian, the Methodist, the Bap- tis:, the Episcopal (St. Thomas), the Seventh- Day Adventists, the Catholic and the Dutch Keformed. There is also one daily news- Paper, the Journal, and three weeklies.
The country around Battle Creek is mod- erately undulating with a good soil, produc- ing wheat, corn and all kinds of fruit. Wool a.so is a staple product. These with flour :el live stock, are largely exported; the shipments of apples alone for the past season Leing 50,000 barrels. The river and creek fur- nuh a valuable water power.
