FAIR HAVEN.


A village of 500 inhabitants, in Ira town- ship, St. Clair county. It is on Anchor bay, lake St. Clair, and is 30 miles south of Port Huron, 9 east of New Haven, its shipping point via the Grand Trunk railroad, and 40 from Detroit. Flour, lumber, staves and heading are manufactured, and with grain and wood are shipped. A stage runs to New Haven daily, carrying the mail. Henry C. Sch noor, postmaster.

A settlement of about 100 inhabitants in Vergennes township, Kent county, 5 miles north of Lowell, and 20 east of Grand Rapids. Flat river, upon which it is situated, affords excellent water power, in part utilized by a flouring mill. FALMOUTH.


A village of 50 population on Clam river, a branch of the Muskegon, in the central part of Missauke county, 22 miles east of Clam Lake, on the G. R. & I. R. R. It is the location of a large saw and shingle mill owned by Thos. Palmer, of Detroit, and pine logs, lumber and shingles are its only products, though the country around, which consists of beech, maple and pine rolling lands, raises successfully wheat, corn, oats, barley, millet and potatoes. An incorporated village of 500 population in Farmington township, Oakland county, 15 miles south of Pontiac, the county seat, and 20 northwest of Detroit, Novi, 5 miles west on the F. & P. M. Ry., is its railroad point. The Rouge river affords a moderate water power. The village has 2 flouring mills, 2 saw mills, and 2 cider mills, 3 churches, Baptist, Methodist and Universal- ist, a handsome new town hall, I hotel, and S or 9 stores, with a fair showing of artisans and professional men. FARWELL.


The county seat of Clare county, is a thriving village of about 500 .inhabitants, located in Surrey township, near the southern border of the county. It is a station on the I' & P M Ry, by which it is 55 miles north- west of Saginaw, 34 east of Reed City and 1544 from Detroit. Farwell is situated on


high rolling land in the pine region of north- ern Michigan and ships annually large quantities of lumber, shingles and lath. It has 7 saw and shingle mills, a new flouring mill, a hemlock extract factory, a Congrega- tional church just completed, a large school building, lodges of Masons, Odd Fellows and Good Templars, and two hotels, the Farwell House being first class. A live weekly news- paper the Register is published. Tobacco river, a branch of the Tittabawassee, flows through the village. Settled 1870. Express, American. Telegraph, Western Union. Mail, daily. FAWN RIVER.


A village of some 75 inhabitants, situated on a stream of the same name, in the south- east part of St Joseph county. Wheat, corn, po- tatoes and fruit are cultivated in the vicinity. Distance from Centerville, the county seat, 18 miles. Ship to Sturgis, 5 miles west.


FAYETTE.


A village on the east shore of Big Bay du Noquet, one of northern arms of Green bay, in the township of Fairbanks, Delta county, 30 miles due east of Escanaba. The latter place is the nearest approach by rail. It was settled about 1867, having grown up around a blast furnace established here by the Jack- son Iron Company.


FENNVILLE.


A village on the C & M LS R R., in Clyde township, Allegan county, 15 miles west of Allegan, the county seat, and 41 southwest of Grand Rapids. Wheat, onts, corn, grass and fruits of all kinds are the agricultural productions. Settled 1860. Population 300. Fruits, grain, lumber and shingles are shipped. Express, American. FENTONVILLE.


An incorporated village of 2500 inhabi- tants in the township of Fenton, Genesee county. It is on the D. & M. railroad, 5 miles west of Holly, the junction of the F. & P. M. Ry, 28 east of Owosso, and 50 northwest of Detroit. It is surrounded by an excellent rolling farming country, produc- ing grain, hay, and general farm products. There is located here a large high school, and two seminaries for both sexes, one under the supervision of the Baptist denomination of Michigan, and the other non-sectarian, The principal manufactories are I woolen mill, I flouring mill, 2 planing mills, I pump factory, I drill press factory, I foundry and machine shop, I agricultural implement fac- tory, and some smaller industries. There are 2 local newspapers, the Gazette and Indie- pendent. There are 6 churches, Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Episcopal, Presbyterian and Universalist, the two former being beau- tiful edifices. The north branch of the Shiawassee river flows through the town and furnishes good water power. Wheat, wool, pork, butter, eggs and apples form the prin- cipal shipments. A beautiful lake, about two miles from the village, is becoming a popular resort of pleasure seekers. Abun- dance of excellent fish are found in its waters. Express, American. A village of 150 inhabitants on the north branch of White river, in Ferry township, Oceana county. It is six miles east of New Era, on the G. R. division of the M. C. R. R., 14 southeast of Hart, the county seat, and 39 north of Muskegon. The river fur- nishes excellent water power, utilized by flouring and lumber mills. The surround- ing country is new, but well adapted to grain and fruit. Wheat, corn, pork, poultry and lumber are exported. Settled 1872. American express. Stage to Shelby tri- weekly. Mail daily.
