A post town and the seat of justice of Hancock county, is situated on the Indi- ana Central Railway, 20 miles from In- dianapolis, 13 miles from Knightstown,

33 miles from Cambridge, 49 miles from Richmond, and was laid out and settled in 1829. Donated by Meek, Winfield and Spillman. Additions have since been made by E. K. Hart and Morris Pierson. It contains four churches-one Methodist, one Baptist, one Presbyterian and one Christian-one public school with excel- lent accommodations for seventy-five scholars, one select school, under good management, with about one hundred pupils. It has a fine court house, built at an expense of $17,000, one steam saw mill, one steam grist mill situated on the I. C. R. W., six dry goods stores, five gro- ceries, one bakery, one livery stable, two hotels-the "Greenfield" and "Howard"- two boot and shoe stores, one newspaper called the Sentinel, edited by Charles G. Warner, one clothing store, two wagon shops, one hardware store, two harness and saddle shops, two reaping machine shops, one Odd Fellows' Hall, and one Masonic Hall-both fine buildings. Pop- ulation 700.

GREEN OAK,


A post office of Fulton county, situated 5 miles from Rochester, the county seat, and about 80 miles from Indianapolis. It con- tains one store, one blacksmith shop, one physician, one steam saw mill, one Union meeting house, and a district school of about sixty scholars. Population, 50.

GREENSBORO, A post office of Henry county.


GREENSBURGH,


A post town and the county seat of De- catur connty, situated on the Indianaro- lis and Cincinnati Railroad, 58 miles from Indianapolis, 52 miles from Cincinnati. 61 miles from Columbus, 32 miles from Lawrenceburg, and 32 miles from Shelby- ville. This town was laid out in 1822 by Thomas Hendricks, on elevated ground. The total estimate of trade and commerce for this place for 1857, amounted to $1 .- 500,000. It contains the finest court- honse in the State, built at an expense of $100,000; built in the middle of the pub- lic square, and which adds a great deal to the appearance of the town. It has two steam flouring mills, which manufacture a large quantity of superfine flour. It

contains ten dry goods stores, twelve gro- ceries, two carriage shops, two wagon shops, two saw mills, four jewelry stores, two daguerrean galleries, ten boot and shoe stores, two newspapers-the Democrat and Republican-five clothing stores, one bank, one large agricultural ware-house, one forwarding and commission ware- house, two drug stores, four hotels, one large union school, together with a num- ber of select schools, all very well at- tended; four churches, viz: one Baptist, one Methodist, one Presbyterian and one Campbellite, having each neat and com- modious places of worship. Greensburgh has the usual number of lawyers, doctors, ministers, &c. Population 2,500.
