MISHAWAKA,
A town of St. Joseph county, beautifully situated on the St. Joseph River, at what is called the Rapids, as its name in the Indian language indicates, and on the line of the Michigan Southern and Northern In- diana Railroad, four miles east of South Bend, the county seat, and 90 miles from Chicago. It is one of the oldest and most healthy towns in the St. Joseph Valley, and contains many fine residences, with good stores, many of brick, and well finished. Its inhabitantsare enterprising and energetic, and the town is noted for its many manufactures. The river at this place is dammed, furnishing a very exten- sive and the best water power on the river. About one-half of it is improved, with a variety of manufactories, compri- sing a woolen factory with capacity to make twenty thousand yards of cloth per annum; also, a very extensive carriage and wagon manufactory, turning out $150,000 worth of manufactured articles per year. It has, also, two saw mills, making 2,000,000 feet of Inmber per an- num. Four or five millions feet of lumber is brought here for sale and shipment. In the immediate vicinity there are five mills, a flonring and grist mill, with six run of stone, having capacity to manufacture 250 barrels per day, an extensive edge tool and axe manufactory, a large machine shop for making all kinds of machinery con-
