A post office of Jay county, situated 6 miles south of Portland, 12 miles north of Winchester, laying on the Winchester and Fort Wayne State Road. It contains one banker and dealer in exchange, one black- smith, one bookseller and stationer, three cabinet and furniture dealers, one car- riage and coachmaker, four clergymen, one clothier, three flour and grain deal- ers, one jeweler and watchmaker, one cooper, one church, one tailor, and one school with an average attendance of forty pupils. It contains about 100 in- habitants.

BLUFFTON,


A post village, and the county seat of Wells county, situated on the south bank of the Wabash river, 25 miles south of Fort Wayne and 90 miles northeast of In- dianapolis. It was first settled in 1838, and contains a good court house, three churches : one United Brethren, one Pres- byterian, one Methodist Episcopal; two hotels, the "Central" and "Washington;" two gristmills, two steam sawmills, one water sawmill, two weekly newspapers, the Bluffton Banner, Democratic, and the People's Press, Republican; about twenty stores of various kinds, two magistrates, six lawyers, five physicians, six clergy- men, one express office, insurance agency, banking house, and four schools, with an attendance of three hundred pupils. Population, 800.

A post office.in Miller township, Dearborn county. The township has about 500 in- habitants, chiefly farmers. There is also a protection society here, organized in 1853, which numbers sixty members, as a protection against horse thieves, and which the inhabitants regard better than an in- surance company. Since the company was formed there have been only two cases of horse stealing, and the horses were both found. The officers are: Ezekiel Jackson, President; R. C. Jackson and R. C. Whipple, Vice Presidents; H. Dawson, Secretary ; Silas Nowlin, Captain; Thos. Hargett, Treasurer. It has two black- smiths, four carpenters, one carriage ma- ker, five ministers, three general stores, one attorney at law and notary public, two justices of the peace, one steam saw mill, three coopers. There are seven churches in the township, four Methodist Episcopal, two Methodist Protestant, and one Presbyterian, and eight schools, with an average attendance for each school of thirty-five pupils.
