JEFFERSONVILLE,

A City of Clark county, situated on the Ohio river, at the head of the Falls, nearly opposite Louisville, Kentucky, 40 miles be- low Madison, 4 miles above New Albany, and 12 miles south-west from Charlestown, the county seat. It is located on the site of old fort Steuben, on elevated ground affording a delightful view of the city of Louisville, of the meandering Ohio for several miles. with its verdaut islands, winding its way among the sloping hills, whose rich foliage could be but equalled by the famous Alpines, the vine-clad hills of Spain or the dazzling Orient. The Ohio is about a mile wide at this point, and at its lowest stage has water suffi- cient for boats of the largest class. The fall here is twenty-two feet in less than two miles, affording a water power un- surpassed if not unequalled in the United States, and which has laid entirely unim- proved until within the past three years. There is now one fine flouring mill in suc- cessful operation and capable of turning out one hundred and fifty barrels of flour per day at any season of the year. In point of manufacturing facilities, Jeffer- sonville stands without a rival. She is the present terminus of the Jeffersonville and Indianapolis Railroad, and with a canal around the falls, might become the most important point on the Ohio river. The State Prison located here, is always full, and adds but little, if any, to the morality or prosperity of the place.

The facilities for steamboat building are good, and which has been extensively car- ried on heretofore.

The streets run at right angles, are wide and well paved. There are more miles of paving in this town than in any other place of its size in the state. It contains one of the finest Houring mills in the state, has several manufacturing establishments, stores, &c. Population 3,500.
