son and the Ohio river, at an elevation of nearly 150 feet above low water, and is accessable by both wagon and railroad, the first taking a circuitous route around the mountain side, while the railway takes an air-line through deep cuts and over dismal ravines, which cannot fail to excite in the breast of travelers feelings of awe and admiration. The ascent of the train is aided by the introduction of cog-work between the rails, which connects with the engine, making the ascent with a loaded train, with seemingly the same ease as they do the descent, which is ac- complished by the application of the breaks, dispensing with the engine alto- gether.
The location of North Madison is heal- thy, the scenery is beautiful, and the sur- rounding country is very fertile and well settled with industrious and wealthy far- mers. The village contains five churches, one academy, one steam saw mill, three dry goods stores, two groceries, one drug store, and one shoe store, besides several other similar enterprises.
