A post office of Bartholomew county, situ- ated on Clifty creek, nine miles E. N. E. of Columbus.


NEWBERRY,


A post village of Cass township, Greene county, situated on the eastern bank of the west branch of White river, at the great feeder dam of the Wabash and Erie Canal. This is one of the most flourishing and business towns in the State. The town was laid out and the first buildings erected in 1851, by Messrs. Willard Car- penter and B. F. Morse, proprietors, and since then has increased very rapidly, and is now about the chief town in the county. It contains two large and well kept hotels, -


[eight dry goods stores, one clothing store exclusively in that trade, two grocery stores, one drug store, three large storage and commission warehouses, two pork packing establishments, two large flouring and saw mills in active operation, and one large saw mill in course of building and soon to be in operation, one extensive cabinet and furniture establishment, two blacksmith shops, and one wagon making establishment. There is one fine church edifice, owned by the Lutherans, and oc- cupied temporarily by the Baptists, Meth- odists and Presbyterians; one excellent school and academy, average attendance about 50 pupils. There were shipped from this point, and purchased here during last spring and summer, fifty thousand bushels of wheat, corn and oats; over 5,000 hogs were purchased and packed here; there have been manufactured, sold and shipped over one thousand barrels of flour. Newberry is situated in the very heart of one of the best agricultural dis- tricts in the west; the lands are unsur- passed in productiveness, either for grain or grasses. The Wabash and Erie Canal affords a constant outlet for produce. It is ten miles distant from the county seat, 80 miles south of Indianapolis, 40 miles north-east of Vincennes, 75 miles north of Evansville, and 20 miles from Wash- ington Station on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. Population 500.

NEWBURGH,


A town of Warrick county, situated on the Ohio river, 10 miles above Evansville, is a flourishing place, and the largest in the county. Its many churches, its liter- ary institutions and manufacturing estab- lishments evince the morality, intelligence and enterprise of its citizens. It contains one weekly newspaper, the Warrick Coun- ty Democrat, three flouring mills (steam), one hotel, five general stores, three car- riage, coach, and wagon manufactories, two plow factories, three boot and shoe stores, one steam saw mill, five physi- cians, two saddle and harness manufacto- ries, two dry goods stores, one merchant tailor, one hardward store, one grocery, four coopers, one cabinet and furniture dealer, one tanner and currier, one brick maker, one seminary, under the direction of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, four churches, and two public schools. Population 1,500.
