LOGANSPORT,

The county seat of Cass county, named after the Shawnee chief, Logan, nephew of Tecumseh, and the friend of Gen. Har- rison's army in the war of 1812, who fell in a rencontre with a party of the enemy, on the banks of the Miami of the Lake, in 1812, and is situated at the conflueuce of the Wabash and Eel rivers. It was laid off in the spring of 1828, on a tract of land, reserved to George Cicott, by the treaty with the Potawattamnie Indians in the fall of 1826. Hugh B. McKeen, Gen. John Tipton,, and Chauncey Carter, be- came interested in the reserve, and they divided the tract among themselves. Chauncy Carter became the proprietor of that portion now lying west of the canal and extending to the "Point" or junction of the rivers, which he laid off into lots, and which is known as the "original plat." General Tipton took the portion lying east of the last named tract between the rivers, and which has since been laid off into additions to the town; and Mr. McKeen became proprietor of the portion lying north of Eel river, which has since been laid off into West Logan. Logans- port with its additions, including West Logan and Brownstown, on the north side of Eel river, and Taborville, on the south side of the Wabash, contains at this time a population of about 4,500 inhabit- ants. Its progress has been firm and steady, though not at any time rapid. Its position as a manufacturing town, is one of the best, if not indeed the best in the western country. The Wabash and Eel rivers, at and near this point, afford fine falls of water, which, with a proper capital and enterprise, could be readily converted to extensive manufacturing purposes. The falls of Eel river, at Logansport, are in part improved by the erection of a flonring mill, running six pairs of stones, and a sawing mill, running two circular and one straight saw, for the manufac- ture of Immuber, vaneering and box tim- ber; but the falls of the Wabash, contain- ing much the largest body of water, is yet entirely unimproved. Besides these advantages, Logansoprt also stands in the midst of a country possessing an excel- lent soil, fine timber, and au abun lance

of lime and free stone. Its business, and especially its exporting trade, is sur- passed by few towns of its size. The favorable position it occupies in regard to the lines of the Wabash and Eriecanal, the Toledo, Wabash and Western railroad, and the Cincinnati and Chicago railroad, which intersect at this point, will always ensure to it the trade of a large scope of country, which it now commands. Lo- ยท gansport is handsomely situated. and con- tains many elegant public and private buildings. A number of these buildings are of the stone in the vicinity, and pre- sent a neat and substantial appearance.
