BLOOMINGTON,

A flourishing post town and the county seat of Monroe county, is pleasantly situ- ated on the line of the New Albany and Salem Railroad. The town was laid out the 12th day of June, 1818, by Benjamin Park, agent, who was appointed by the County Commissioners. James Boland made an addition to the north on Novem- ber 7th, 1520. This place has been rap- idly improving. The public buildings are fine and substantial, and the public square highly ornamented with shade- trees and shrubbery. This town is the seat of the State University, which was founded in 1835. The first president was Andrew Wylie, who held the presidency until his death in 1851. Wm. M. Daily, a graduate of the University in 1886, was elected to succeed Mr. Wylie, and took the chair in 1858. There are also two flour- ishing literary societies connected with the University. The new University is a plain, substantial building. in the gothic style, three stories high, 145 feet long hy 53 feet

The apparatus for chemical and philo- sophical illustrations is respectable. The mineralogical cabinet contains many val- uable and interesting specimens. An ad- dition of 800 volumes, worth fifteen hun- dred dollars, has been made to the Uni- versity library by a munificent donation from H. W. Derby, Esq., of Cincinnati, O. An alcove is being fitted up in the new library room for their reception, where they will remain as monuments of the liberality of the donor, who has the warm- est feelings of gratitude of every friend of the University. Bloomington has two good female seminaries, both under the best of management. A number of good public schools all well attended; eight churches-two Presbyterian, one Metho- dist, one Christian, one Baptist, one Asso- ciate Reform, one Seceder, and one Cove- nanter-one flouring-mill, three saw-mills in the vicinity, one foundry, one plow fac- tory, one carriage factory, one wagon shop, one machine shop, two tanneries, one cooper shop, two saddle and harness shops, one stove and tin shop, one hard- ware, seven groceries, three drug-stores, ten dry goods stores, five boot and shoe shops, three blacksmith shops, and the usual number of carpenters, masons, &c., fourteen attorneys, and eight physicians.
