WABASH,

The county seat of Wabash county, is lo- cated near the center of the county, on the Wabash and Erie Canal, the Wabash River, and the Toledo, Wabash and Wes- tern Railroad, giving it very superior op- portunities for travel, and for transporta . tion. Its location is high, healthy and beautiful. Abundance of stone for build- ing purposes, and flaging for the improve- ment of its streets, are found but a few feet below the surface of the earth, and ex- tending for some miles along the brow of the bluff, on which the town is chietly built.

It contains one bank, one woolen factory, two hotels, twodrug stores, two hardware, two store and tin, two shoe stores, two

merchant tailor establishments, one cloth- ing store, two furniture stores, eight gro- ceries and provision stores, (only two of which keep liquor for retail, ) and eleven dry goods stores, besides quite a variety of manufacturing shops. It has also five large warehouses on the canal, four church edifices-one Methodist, one Baptist, and two Presbyterian. There has also been erected, by the town, the present season, a fine public Union School House, 70 feet by 90, and three stories high. The Railroad Company have a depot and a large ware- house in the town. A plank road runs north toward Eel River till it strikes sandy and good lands, eight miles, and the stock is all taken for building another plank road south ten miles, to the Missis- sinewa. The buildings in the business part of the town are principally brick ; many of them very fine ones, and its pro- gress in wealth, improvement, educational advantages, &c., though not rapid, is steady and permanent. All who pass through admire its location, and those who stop are surprised at the business activity of the place. Population 1,500.

WARSAW,

The county seat of Kosciusko county, is situated on the southern banks of a beau- tiful lakelet near the geographical center of the county, and was laid out in the year 1835. For many years it had but simply a name, and labored under many disadvantages. Within a few years its prospects have been brightening, and is now looking forward to a bright future when she will rank among the fine cities west of Fort Wayne on the line of the Ft. Wayne and Chicago Railroad. The rail- road passes through the southern skirts of the town. The shipments of wheat and pork during the past year alone at this depot have amounted to about $150,000. The streets of the town are all being gra- ded, and there is in process of erection a union school house, calculated to accom- modate five hundred pupils. One steam flouring mill, saw mill and foundry, com- prise the present manufacturing establish- ments. There are three churches, Metho- dist, Presbyterian and Baptist, also other church organizations, embracing Disciples, Universalists and United Brethren. Secret orders, Masonic, I. O. O. F. and Good Temp- lars. Population, about 1,200.
