A post village of Fulton county. The name of the post office at this place is "Kewanna." The village is situated 14 miles from Rochester, the county seat, and 90 miles north of Indianapolis.

PLYMOUTH,


The county seat of Marshall county, is pleasantly situated on the north bank of Yellow River, 25 miles from its conflu- ence with the Kankakee River, and on the Michigan Road, 112 miles north of Indianapolis, forty-two miles north of Logansport, 24 miles south of South Bend, and at the intersection of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad, with the Chicago, Peru and Union Railroad. finished from Laporte to Plymouth, 65 miles from Fort Wayne, and about 28 miles from Laporte. It is situated in a fine farming district, and has an active trade. A plank road connects it with Michigan City. It has several churches, a branch bank, several stores, hotels, schools, court house, county offices, fine dwelling houses, and is destined to be- come a place of some importance. The line of the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad will be shortly com- pleted and in full operation from Plymouth to Chicago, which eventually will be of great value to the interests of Plymouth. It is distant 88 miles from Chicago, and contains a newspaper office, the Marshall County Republican, published weekly by T. Mattingly. Population, 1,500.

The nearest railroad points are Bloomington, on the New Albany and Salem Railroad, 28 miles distant, and Sullivan, on the Evansville & Crawfordsville Railroad, 30 miles dis- tant. The country north, east and south is hilly and picturesque; on the west it is undulating and interspersed with prairie. It contains two steam saw mills, one grist mill, one woolen factory running 180 spindles and four looms, one general store, one grocery and provision store, two black- smiths, one boot and shoe maker, three carpenters and builders. one cabinet and furniture dealer, two wagon makers, one Hour and grain dealer, one hotel, one at- torney at law, one notary public, one jus- tice of peace, two physicians and surgeons, one plasterer, two coopers, one painter, one tailor and clothier, one wood turner, one church, (Methodist Episcopal, ) one clergyman, and one school with 34 pupils in attendance. The county seat of Jay county, is situated on the Salamonie River, and on the plank road from Winchester to Fort Wayne, 90 miles east of north-east of Indianapolis. The town was laid out in 1837, under the name of Portland. The post-office is call- ed Jay, or Jay Court-house. It contains a seminary, good schools, several churches, stores, and has two newspapers offices, viz: The Jay County Republican, published by Mr. S. Jones, and the Jay County Dem- ocral, published by McCormick & Moore. Both of these newspapers are published weekly. Population 1,000.

PRINCETON,


The county seat of Gibson county. It was named after the Hon. Win. Prince, and settled late in 1812, or early in 1813. The situation is a very fine one, and the place contains good residences and business houses. It has seven churches, one each for the Presbyterians, Covenanters, Cum- berland Presbyterians, Associate Re- formed, Reformed Presbyterians or Pro- ne- natas, Methodist and German Lu- theran. There are two seminaries or high schools, and three or four minor

schools. Two newspapers, the "Princeton Clarion" and "Southern Indianian," are published here. It has two extensive grist mills, one saw mill, and a furniture factory, all run by steam. The factory manufactures a large quantity of furni- ture, supplying the adjoining counties and having a large surplus for exporta- tion, which is sent to southern Illinois. Princeton is situated in latitude 38° 31' west, 28 miles north of Evansville, and the same distance south of Vincennes, and is on the Evansville and Crawfordsville railroad, which makes its trips with great regularity. The place is about the most handsome one of its size in the state, and contains an intelligent population. Pop- ulation about 2,000.
