MUNCIE.

Muncie, the county seat of Delaware coun- ty, is situated near the geographical cen- ter of the county, on the south bank of White River, 54 miles by railroad from Indianapolis, in a beautiful and thickly settled country. The post-office, of the same name, yields a larger revenue than any other in this part of Indiana. The name of the town and post-office was ori- ginally " Muncietown," but the Legisla- ture and the Post-office Department have stricken off the " town," and the name of each now stands as at the head of this ar- ticle.

It is a town of between 2,500 and 3,000 inhabitants, with fine dwellings and pub- lic buildings, and convenient streets, or- namented with numerous shade trees. In it there are, besides the county buildings, two ffine, large church edifices, built of brick, at an expense each of about $6,000; one of the largest and best arranged touring mills in the State, driven by wa- ter and steam powers, and factories of va- rious kinds, two banks -- the one a Branch of the Bank of the State of Indiana, hav- ing a good brick bank building-its offi- cers: John Marsh, president, and John W. Burson, cashier. The other, the "Ex- change Bank," of Wolfe & Buxton, Ma- sonic and Odd Fellows' Hall, one printing office, the office of the Delaware County Free Press, a large and well conducted county newspaper, two large two story brick school houses, common and select schools, fifteen dry goods stores, two ex- tensive hardware establishments, three drug stores, three stove and tin-ware es- tablishments, two saddle and harness making shops, two wholesale and eigh- teen retail groceries, six produce ware- houses, hat, cap, boot and shoe dealers and manufacturers, cabinet makers, chair makers, blacksmiths, gun smiths, hotels, livery stables, Xe. It is one of the best points for business in this part of Indi- ana, and there is no doubt would well re- pay the establishing of a large foundry and machine shop. There are two perma-

nent daguerrean galleries, three minis- ters, eight physicians, and twelve law- vers. The Indianapolis, Pittsburg, and Cleveland Railroad passes close to the south side of the town, having at this point good passenger and freight depots, engine houses, &c. There is more grain shipped from this station than from any other on the line of that railroad between Indianapolis and Cleveland.

The country around is well adapted to the growth of all the various kinds of grain and grass, more especially wheat and grass, and is rapidly filling up with large, well improved, and well stocked farms, fine dwellings and large and con- venient barns, with all the other indica- tions of prosperous, energetic and wealthy farmers.

The situation of the town is healthy and pleasant. In the south-west part of the town, there are three large mounds of gravel, which, whether natural, or made by the aborigines, would be a curious study for the antiquarian. Skeletons of members of the human race, whether In- dian or otherwise, have been unearthed from those mounds, frequently in a good state of preservation.
