LAFONTAINE, A post office of Wabash county.

LA GRANGE,

The county seat of La Grange county, is situated in the geographical center of the county, on Fly Creek, a tributary of Pigeon River. The stream is small but very durable, and affords excellent hydraulic . power for propelling machinery. It con- tains five dry goods, three grocery, and two hardware stores, two hotels, with the usual variety of the professions, and me- chanical trades, such as shoe makers, blacksmiths, cabinet makers, carpenters, tailors, saddlers, &c. There are two beau- tiful churches, one seminary, a district school house, and two other private schools. Although there are at present no natural or artificial thoroughfares by which to carry on an extensive trade with other places, yet the pick axe, shovels, wheel- barrows and carts, with sturdy hearts and willing hands to wield them, are gradu- ally leveling the hills and filling the val- lies, preparatory for the iron horse to travel upon the Grand Rapids and Indi- ana Railroad, which, when completed, will give the citizens of La Grange facili- ties for travel and shipping their products to other and larger markets. LA PORTE,

The county seat of La Porte county, is sit- uated on the northern part of Door Prai- rie, which is noted above all other parts of the county for its fertility and beauty, and at the junction of the Cincinnati, Pern and Chicago, with the Michigan South- ern, and Northern Indiana Railroad, and is about the center of the county. Upon the north-west, and immediately adjoining the city plat, is Clear Lake, which fur- mishes a popular place of amusement, a lasting fountain of water, and subserves many other desirable and valuable pur- poses. In 1853 the city corporation was first organized according to the provisions of the General Assembly, and for that pur- pose made William J. Walker mayor. It has at present about 7,500 inhabitants. The buildings more recently erected, are of the better quality, and improvements in the number and style of buildings are being made rapidly.

Within the city and county education has generally received considerable at- tention. Four large and commodions buildings have been lately built for the free schools within the city.

There are nine churches, the denomina- tions and ministers of which are as fol- lows:

Presbyterian (New School)-Rev. John W. Cunningham, pastor.

Baptist-Rev. J. L. McCloud, pastor.

Swedenborgean-Rev. J. S. Weller, pas- tor. 1

Christian, (Campbellite)-Rev. Wm. Lane, pastor.

Most of which have church edifices which display both taste and liberality.

Three newspapers are published in the city, the La Porte Union, La Porte Times, and La Porte Advertiser, (German.)
