MIAMI,


A post office of Miami county.


MICHIGAN CITY,


A city of Laporte county, situated on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of Trail creek, 54 miles by railroad from Chicago, 133 miles north-west of Laporte, the county seat, and 154 miles from Indianapolis. It is well situated for the carrying on of a large trade, having communication by means of the Michigan Central and New Albany and Salem Railroads and Lake Michigan with all eastern, western and southern cities. It contains an extensive railroad car and agricultural works, owned by Haskell, Barker & Aldridge, who employ about 150 men, pay wages to the amount of $6,000 per month, have a capital of fifty thousand dollars invested in build- ings, machinery and land, and two hun- dred and twenty-five thousand dollars in stock, material, &c. This firm manufac- ture annually about two hundred and fifty freight and passenger cars, to the value of $250,000, and agricultural implements to the value of $30,000; also one steam saw mill, with two engines, running two saws, giving employment to 30 hands. and sawing about two million feet per annum. It contains several stores of dry goods, groceries, hardware, clothing, drugs, books and stationery, three hotels, one news- paper, the Michigan City Enterprise, pub- lished by L. B. Wright, one large district school building, costing $4,000, with an average attendance of two hundred pupils, six churches, German Lutheran, German Methodist Episcopal, Congregational, Epis- copal, Methodist and Catholic. The pop- ulation, in Sept., 1857, was 8,388. About 60 houses and stores have been erected, or in course of building, since January, 1857. The Episcopal congregation have just com- pleted a very comfortable and fine build- ing built of wood. It has four daily mails, two East, one West and one South, one line of stages running daily to Laporte, leaving the Jewell House in the morning ; fare, 75 cents. Population, 3,500.
