SALAMONIA, A post office of Jay county.
SALEM,
The county seat of Washington county, situated on the New Albany and Salem Railroad, 35 miles north of New Albany, 35 miles south of Bedford, 61 miles from Bloomington, and 162 miles south of La- fayette. This town was laid out in the spring of 1814. into 142 lots, by Gen. Jno. Depauw. Two further additions were made by Gen. Depauw; one on November 14, 1814, of 44 lots; and another on No- vember 15, 1815, of 25 lots. Several ad- ditions were subsequently made in the years 1816, 1819, 1837, 1838, 1843, and the last addition made by Sampson King in 1851. Salem is celebrated for its beautiful scenery and the richness and productiveness of the surrounding coun- try, the farms being well cultivated and inhabited by an intelligent and wealthy class of people. It is a town of some pre- tensions, and is progressing and keeping pace with any other town or city in the State. The inhabitants are engaged in manufactures of various kinds to a large extent. There are two large carriage and wagon shops, one of which is extensively manufacturing for the southern and west- ern markets. The very best of material can be obtained in the vicinity of the town for this branch of industry. It has also two woolen and one cotton factory, manufacturing several thousand dollars worth of woolen and cotton cloths, and employing several hands; one edge tool factory, one shingle machine, one stove factory, two tanneries, one brewery, and two large flouring mills, making some four to five hundred barrels of flour per day, a large portion of which is shipped to for- eign markets; one bakery, three stove and tinware shops, six dry goods stores, four clothing stores, two drug stores, four gro- ceries, and the usual supply of the pro- fessions. It contains very fine public buildings. The court house is two stories in height, and is both plain and Heat.
