Action of the General Court on the Petition of William Basset and others.

[From the Massachusetts Court Records, June 4, 1685.]

In ans' to the petition of Wm Basset, Jnº Lynsey, Robert Porter, Señ, & a twenty two more inhabitants of Ljn, Jere- miah Swayne, Samll Damon, Sam Lambson, Wm Robbins, James Pyke, Jun, & James Nicholls, of Reading, Wm Ray- mond, & 5 more, of Beverly, & Samuel Lyncolne, & three more, of Hingham, as on ye peticon on file, the Court judgeth it meet to grant the peticoners a tract of land, in the Nipmug* country, of eight miles square, for their encourage- ment and others that were serviceable to the country in the late Indean warr, to a competent number, who shall see meet

"Nipmuch [Nipnet] was a name given to the petty tribes, or clans, of inland Indians scattered over a large extent of country, in Windham and Tolland Counties in Connecticut, Worcester and Hampden Counties in Massachusetts. and the northern part of Rhode Island ; but their princip il seat was at, or near, the great ponds in Oxford (Webster), Mass. From these ponds they probably derived their name of "Pond" or "Fresh- water" (nippe, nip) Indians. If the two names, or forms of the name, are not identical in origin, Nipnet belongs to the territory, i. e. "at the freshi- water pond"; Nipmuck, to the tribe, (Nip-amaug) "they fish in fresh water"; but possibly "a fresh water fishing-place." This distinguished them from the the Shore Indians, and the River Indians of the Connecticut Valley ; their neighbors on the west. Snipsic (corrupted from Mishenips- et) Pond, in Ellington Conn .. was the bound where the country of the Nipmueks joined that of the River Indians on the west, and the Mohegan north-west angle." Dexter's Church, pt. 1. 17.

either personally present at the Fort & Fight at Narraganset ** or Desendants from those that were or in the strictest alliance to them ; THEREFORE Praying that a Grant may be made them of such vacant Lands as may Serve the Petition's for Settlement under such Restrictions & Limitations as this Court shall judge fit.

In the House of Represetres Read & In answer to this Petition, RESOLVED that Major Thomas Tilestone, Capt. John Alden, Mr Edward Shove, Mr Samuel Healy of Newton & Mr Samuel Chandler of Concord be a Committee fully authorized & impow- ered to survey & lay out the Contents of eight miles square in some of the unappropriated Lands of this Province, and that the said Lands be granted & disposed of to the Persons (whether Officers or Soldiers) belonging to this Province, who were in the Service of their Country in the said Narraganset War or to their legal Representatives, as a Reward for their publick Services, and is in full Satisfaction for the Grant formerly made them by the Great & General Court ; and for as much

Few Indian names have been spelt more ways than this. From the nature of the Indian language, it is evident that nor should be used in it. Nahigonsik and Nantigansick, R. Williams. - Nechegansitt, Gookin. - Nan- tyggansiks, Callender .- Nanohigganset, Winslow's Good News from N. Eng .- Nanhyganset, Judge Johnson's Life of Gen. Green .- These are but few of the permutations without the r, and those with it are still more numerous.

The meaning of the name is still uncertain. Madam Knight in her Journal, 22 and 23. says, at a place where she happened to put up for a night in that country, she heard some of the "town topers" disputing about the origin of the word Narraganset. "One said it was so named by Indians, because there grew a brier there of a prodigious height and bigness, who quoted an Indian of so barbarous a name for his author that she could not write it." Another said it meant a celebrated spring, which was very cold in summer, and "as hot as could be imagined in the winter." Drake's Book of the In- dians, 87.

Roger Williams in an affidavit, says, "I also profess, that being inquisi- tive of what root the title or denomination Nahiganset should come, I heard that Nahiganset was so named from a little Island, between Puttis- quomsett and Musquomacuk, on the sea and fresh water side. I went on purpose to see it, and about the place called Sugarloaf Hill, I saw it, and was within a pole of it, but could not learn why it was called Nahiganset. R. I. Hist. Col. III, 4.

Mr. Trumbull quotes Roger Williams, as above, and says, "to whom I have nothing to add." Dexter's Church pt. 1. 13.

Narraganset is from Nanrantsouack and means a carrying-place. Nor- ridgewock is also a corruption of the same word (See Mem. Amer. Acad. New Series, Vol. 1, pages 372 and 373, ) Potter's Hist. Manchester, N. H. 23.
